A veteran of the communications field, McDermott brings three decades of experience to his new role at Daemen. He began his career as an intern in the Public/Media Relations office of the Buffalo Bills. He spent two years with the Bills before being named assistant sports information director at Rochester Institute of Technology. In the summer of 1990 he was named sports information director at New Hampshire College (now Southern New Hampshire University) in Manchester, N.H. He spent 17 years generating publicity for SNHU’s NCAA Division II varsity sports programs. During his time at SNHU, he served as the media coordinator for numerous NCAA Championship events and initiated an internship program with the school’s Sport Management program. Several of his former interns went on to successful careers in athletic communications. McDermott took on a new challenge in 2007 when he left SNHU and collegiate athletics to become the communication coordinator at the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing at Arizona State University. During his five years at ASU he coordinated all communication and marketing projects for the center. Returning to his native Western New York in 2012, McDermott quickly made an impact by generating both pre-game and post-game content for the Daemen Athletics website. He has been a regular contributor to the coverage of all Daemen teams throughout the last decade. In his new role, McDermott provides leadership to Daemen's athletics communications and media relations staff through the development and execution of a comprehensive, strategic vision and plan which enhances the Daemen University Athletics brand identity. He is responsible for the collection and dissemination of information on all areas of Daemen Athletics including intercollegiate sports teams, community engagement and games and events. His primary duties include strategic planning and creation of written and digital media to be shared through the Daemen Athletics website and various social media platforms, as well as facilitating media coverage from local, regional and national outlets. A graduate of Cardinal O’Hara High School and the State University of New York at Brockport, McDermott currently resides in Amherst, N.Y.
