AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen Wildcats evened their overall record at 7-7 by winning their fourth consecutive game and fifth out of their last six, knocking off the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 75-55 on the second day of the Daemen Can-Am Classic at Lumsden Gymnasium.
Today's game mirrored the Wildcats' outting from one night ago (a 104-69 win vs. Wilfrid Laurier) as coach Don Silveri's squad took a single-digit lead (3 points) into halftime before running their advantage up to double figures for most of the second half.
Sophomore
Jim Regan busted out of an offensive funk to lead the Wildcats with a season-high 16 points in a reserve role along with four rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal.
Junior forward Dominic Mazzocchi canned 6-of-12 from the floor for 15 points to go with his five rebounds. Freshman
Aaron Davis and senior
Moustapha Baidy rounded out the Daemen double figure scorers with 11 and 10 points respectively.
Both of Daemen's freshmen point guards were phenomenol again as
Mark Coppola and
Casey Sheehan combined for nine points, 13 assists, four rebounds, two steals and just four turnovers.
For their efforts in the two-day Can-Am Classic, Baidy and Sheehan were named to the All Can-Am Classic Team with Sheehan bringing home MVP honors.
Arun Kumar led Toronto with 14 points. Toronto's All-Classic representative was Andrew Wasik who sunk 10 points to go with a game-high 12 boards.
The Canadian flavor will continue for the Wildcats after the holiday break as they host Western Ontario University on Dec. 28 at 2pm.
