AMHERST, NY - Daemen's quest for their 20th win of the season hit another roadblock today as they dropped a 3-1 decision (25-22, 16-25, 15-25, 16-25) to the visiting Point Park Pioneers in a key American Mideast Conference match-up. The loss, Daemen's second consecutive, is their first in AMC play as they fall to 19-8, 2-1 while Point Park, ranked as the top team all season long in the AMC/Cal-Pac Unaffiliated NAIA grouping improves to 20-4, 4-0 as they swept their trip north winning matches vs. Houghton and Roberts Wesleyan before this morning's match at Daemen.
Daemen came out hitting on all cylinders as they rode a wave of emotion to a 25-22 win in set one. Then, with Daemen leading 16-13 in the second set, the entire flow of the match changed. Point Park rattled off 12 consecutive points to win the set and the Wildcats never recovered.
"We have to do a better job of handling some adversity," said Daemen head
Mark Parisi. "We can't continue to go in the tank every time something doesn't go our way."
Point Park's Lindsey Oberacker, already a two-time selection as AMC Player of the Week this season, led all players with 15 kills while teammate Brittany Lhota added 12. Setter Tayler Pugliese recorded a match-best 44 assists.
Point Park really rebounded after the first set loss that saw them commit 10 hitting errors. They committed just eight for the remainder of the match and were good for an attack percentage of .340.
Daemen was again led by the combination of junior
Joanna Fretthold and sophomore
Jenn Karan. Fretthold notched a team-best 14 kills to go with 11 digs. Karan wasn't far behind with 13 kills of her own.
Libero
Katie Auge had a team-best 12 digs in the match while
Kimmie Mack led the Daemen setters with 18 assists.
Daemen returns to action with another home match this Wednesday, October 5 when they host Roberts Wesleyan in another important conference match.
