Daemen Overpowers Carlow In Straight Sets

9/24/2011 4:42:00 PM

AMHERST, NY - Daemen's volleyball squad easily handled the visiting Carlow Celtics today in a late afternoon tilt at Lumsden Gymnasium, taking the match in straight sets (25-11, 25-16, 25-16).  With the win, Daemen improves to 18-6 (2-0 in American Mideast Conference play), matching the highest win total of the Mark Parisi Era of Daemen volleyball with 15 matches still remaining this season.  Carlow, who was playing their second match of the day after dropping a four-set decision at Roberts Wesleyan earlier in the day, falls to 5-10, 0-4.

"I was really happy with our focus on every point today," Parisi said afterwards.  "That's something we've been talking about and today we executed."

Junior Joanna Fretthold (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda High School) led the way offensively with a match-high 13 kills.  Sophomore Jenn Karan (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park HS) added nine kills while senior Rachael Bowler (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore West HS) was good for seven kills.

Two players stepping up for Parisi in the match were sophomore Rachel Ottoway (Sherman, NY/Sherman Central HS) and freshman Samantha Snyder (Adams, NY/South Jefferson HS).  Ottoway was near dominant in the middle as she pounded down eight kills to go with two blocks.  Snyder, who saw action only in the third set, had four kills in her six attempts.

"Ottaway and Snyder have had some really good practices of late and it was nice to see them have success in a match," Parisi added.

Sophomore Kaley Vazquez (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West HS) led the Daemen setters with 20 assists while senior Kimmie Mack (Livonia, NY/Livonia HS) added 14.

Gina Chesterfield led Carlow with six kills.  Daemen held Carlow to a hitting perfentage of just .013 compared to .412 for the Wildcats.

Freshman Chelsea Turcer (Alexander, NY/Alexander HS) made her presence felt with four service aces while junior libero Katie Auge (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca HS) once again paced the Daemen defense with 18 digs and zero serve receive errors in 14 attempts.

Next up for Daemen is a non-conference match-up as they host the Buffalo State Bengals this Tuesday night at 7pm.
