NORTH CANTON, OH - Four goals from four different players helped the Daemen Wildcats come away with a hard fought 4-2 road win against the Walsh Cavaliers. With the win, Daemen improves to 7-2 on the season while Walsh drops to 6-2. The game counts in the American Mideast Conference standings, although Walsh is not eligible for post-season play due to their status as transitioning to NCAA Division II.
"We came out strong and played very well," said Daemen head coach
Dan Dolan. "The second half was a bit of a different story and we stopped playing our game. But, it was nice to get out of here with a win."
Daemen took a 3-0 lead into halftime after seniors
Jenelle Masi (Greece, NY),
Lindsay Miller (Pocono Lake, PA) and
Alicia Vasiloff (East Syracuse, NY) all recorded goals in the period.
Junior
Kelsey O'Leary (Rochester, NY) assisted on Masi's goal which opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Vasiloff then found Miller for her second tally of the season in the 26th minute. 10 minutes later, Miller returned the favor as she hit Vasiloff who notched her fifth of the season.
The second half saw Daemen's lead evaporate to just one as Walsh got single tallies from Lauren Jokovich and Molly Martin. Daemen's
Alexa Amato (Grand Island, NY) put the game away when she stole the ball from a Walsh defender inside the Cavalier box and beat the keeper in the 88th minute.
Daemen goalkeeper
Kayla Hampton (DeRuyter, NY), the reigning AMC Defensive Player of the Week, made seven stops to pick up the win.
"Kayla had to bail us out on a few occasions otherwise we may not have won," Dolan noted.
Daemen plays game two of a five consecutive road starts on Tuesday when they travel to Houghton to take on the Highlanders at 5pm.
