NORTH CANTON, OH - The inconsistencies that have plagued the Daemen Wildcats for much of the season reared their ugly heads again tonight as the Wildcats saw their season-best three game winning streak come to an end with a 76-51 loss to conference foe Walsh at Alumni Arena. The loss mars what had been an excellent start to 2012 for the Wildcats (11-9, 4-1) - a stretch that included an 80-73 win over these same Cavaliers just 10 days ago.
"It was just an embarrassing performance on our part tonight," said a frustrated Don Silveri afterwards. "I thought we had turned a corner but we made mistakes tonight that we haven't been making the last two weeks. We didn't execute anything we talked about in regards to a game plan. You can't do that if you expect to beat good teams on the road."
Daemen could muster just 20 points in the opening half as they struggled from the field, shooting just 9-for-28 (32%) in the period. The Wildcats, unofficially, missed nine shots inside of 3 feet from the basket and found themselves down 37-20 at the half. The second half saw more of the same. Daemen wound up committing 23 turnovers which resulted in 33 Cavalier points. The Wildcats were also out-scored 20-8 in the paint; this after dominating the interior in the teams' previous matchup.
"They out-played us in every facet of the game and I thought they were just tougher than us for most of the game, especially in that first half," Silveri added of his team's ineptitudes.
Ron Kinney led a quartet of Cavaliers in double figures with a game-high 17 points. Ryan Burrell added 14 while L.J. Sutton and Cameron Mitchell has 12 and 11 points, respectively. Jeff Copeland tossed in eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds off the bench.
Junior
Jim Regan (Williamsville, NY/Nichols HS) was the lone Wildcat to reach double figures with 14 points to go with seven rebounds. After that, freshmen
Gerald Beverly (Rochester, NY/Gates Chili HS) and
Jordan Greene (Firt Edward,NY/South Glens Falls HS) split 16 points off the bench. The Daemen starters managed just 9-for-30 shooting from the field (30%) - including just 4-for-22 (18%) if you subtract Regan's 5-for-8 showing.
The Wildcats must regroup as they travel to Boston to face Fisher this Saturday.
