AMHERST, N.Y. -A suffocating defensive effort led the Daemen College men's basketball team to a 117-52 victory over Fleming College (Ont.) tonight at DC's Lumsden Gymnasium.
It marked the second-straight 100-point effort for the Wildcats, who defeated Niagara College (Ont.) in their season-opener, 108-67, Wednesday night. Fleming dropped to 0-2.
Daemen forced 29 turnovers in the game (19 in the first half), which resulted in 44 points for the hosts. Fleming connected on just 9-of-31 shots in the opening half and finished just 20-of-66 (30%) for the game. Defense was the name of the game early on, as both teams struggled to score and the hosts held a slim 15-14 lead midway through the first half. The Wildcats held a 21-16 lead when Sheehan sparked the hosts to their first double-digit lead of the contest. The 5-foot-9 guard drove the baseline for a pretty layup over several defenders and then drilled a three-pointer on the Wildcat's next possession. Another baseline move by Sheehan resulted in an offensive rebound and dunk by Beverly, giving the hosts a 28-16 lead with 8:05 left before intermission.
Daemen turned the defensive pressure up even more at that point, which paid off in a 22-7 run that gave the hosts a 50-23 lead and got the home crowd into the contest. Satram drilled four of his five three-pointers during the run. Daemen took a 60-25 lead into the break.
A 17-2 run over the first four minutes of the second half gave the hosts a 77-27 lead.
The Wildcats out-rebounded the Knights 55-43 and held a 48-24 edge in points in the paint.
The two teams square off again tomorrow. Game time is 4 p.m. at Lumsden Gymnasium.
