AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen College men's basketball team will look to continue its recent dominance over teams from Ontario, Canada when the Wildcats play host to Redeemer University College in a pair of games this weekend. The teams will square off Friday (Dec. 28) night at 7:30 p.m., before completing the series with a Saturday (Dec. 29) matinee which tips off at 4 p.m. Both games take place at Lumsden Gymnasium on the Daemen campus.
Daemen is 7-0 against Canadian schools this season, with only one of the games being decided by less than 24 points. The Wildcats have topped the 100-point mark in six of the seven games, while winning the seven contests by an average margin of 42 points.
Daemen has won three-straight games (and six of its last seven) and is coming off a 111-87 victory over Wilfrid Laurier University back on Dec. 22. The win improved the Wildcats to 14-4 overall and extended their home winning streak to 19 games (9-0 this season). Daemen is ranked fourth in the USCAA Division I poll released Dec. 21.
Five players are averaging in double figures for Daemen, which is scoring at an average of 88.6 points per game.
Sophomore big man
Gerald Beverly (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) has firmly established himself as one of the top players in the region. He has reached double figures in points 16 times and has recorded eight double-doubles on the year. He totaled 26 points in the win over Wilfrid Laurier and leads the team in scoring (15.8 ppg), rebounding (8.0 rpg) and blocks (32).
Junior guard
Casey Sheehan (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) has averaged 18.6 points over the past seven games and totaled 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists in a huge 88-81 win over NAIA power Grace College. For the season, Sheehan ranks second on the team in scoring (14.4 ppg), three-pointers (19), assists (4.0 apg) and steals (32). Junior point guard
Mark Coppola (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) has dished out seven or more assists seven times this season and leads the team in assists per game (6.3) and steals (36). He scored a career-high 16 points in the win over Wilfrid Laurier and dished out 11 assists (with just one turnover) in the win over Grace. He currently ranks third in career assists (379) among the program's all-time leaders.
Forwards
Kadeem Johnson (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) and
Jim Regan (Williamsville, N.Y./Nichols) have also produced. Johnson has scored in double figures nine times and equaled his career-high for points (18) in the win over Salem International. He is shooting a team-high 61-percent (68-112) from the field and is averaging 10.0 points and 6.7 rebounds. Regan has scored in double figures in five of the last seven games and is averaging 11.0 points and 6.0 rebounds. He recorded his 1,000th career point during the win over Grace and recently became just the fourth player in program history to record 100 career blocks.
Sophomore
Jordan Greene (Fort Edward, N.Y./South Glens Falls) has started the last two games and netted 15 points against Wilfrid Laurier. He connected on 5-of-12 three-pointers and scored a career-high 28 points in a recent loss to Newberry. He leads the team in three-pointers made (36) and three-point field goal percentage (.462), and is averaging 10.9 points. Junior
Troy Nowak (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) played a season-high 21 minutes in the win over Wilfrid Laurier and totaled a season-high 10 points and three steals. Junior
Uchechi Ogbonna (Hicksville, N.Y./Erie CC) scored 11 points in a 73-67 win over rival Roberts Wesleyan and is averaging 8.1 points off the bench. Sophomore
Aaron Davis (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) has seen increased playing time in recent games and scored 12 points in just 13 minutes in the win over Grace. Junior
Alvin Satram (Port Richey, Fla./Pasco Hernando CC) scored nine points off the bench against Grace and ranks third on the team in three-pointers (18).
Daemen and Redeemer have had just one previous meeting, with the Wildcats posting a 120-49 victory over the Royals in November 2003.
Redeemer (3-7) is a member of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA). The Royals have gone 3-3 over their last six games after opening the season with four-straight losses. Junior forward Calvin Turnbull scored 24 points in a recent 90-87 loss to Niagara College and leads the team in scoring (15.0 ppg) and rebounding (7.4 rpg). Additional production has come from junior forward Benn Ibrahim (9.3 ppg, 5.9 rpg), and junior guards Paul Hart (10.2 ppg, 3.2 apg) and Chris McFadden-Martin (7.4 ppg, 5.8 rpg). The Royals are averaging 60.3 points per game.
