Wildcats Top 100-Point Mark For Fifth Time

AMHERST, N.Y. – Senior Jim Regan (Williamsville, N.Y./Nichols) scored 17 of his team-high 19 points in the first half to lead the Daemen College men's basketball team to a 113-53 victory over the Sheridan College Bruins here tonight.

Daemen, which is ranked sixth nationally in the latest United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division I poll, scored over 100 points for the fifth time this season and improved to 10-3. Sheridan, a member of the Ontario College Athletic Association, saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end and dropped to 15-8.

Regan, who now stands just 30 points shy of 1,000 for his career, also recorded nine rebounds. Junior Casey Sheehan (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) totaled 17 points, five assists and three steals for the Wildcats, while sophomore Jordan Greene (Fort Edward, N.Y./South Glens Falls) connected on 3-of-4 three-pointers and totaled 16 points. Sophomore Gerald Beverly (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) added 12 points and seven rebounds in just 15 minutes of action, while sophomore Aaron Davis (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) totaled 12 points and six boards in 16 minutes off the bench. Junior point guard Mark Coppola (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) added seven assists (one turnover) and two steals.

Junior Andrew Stephenson (Brampton, Ont.) led the Bruins with 13 points. Sophomore Michael Selkridge (Brampton, Ont.), who entered the game averaging 24.2 points a game, connected on just 3-of-8 shots and totaled eight points.

Daemen's defensive pressure gave Sheridan problems early on, as the Bruins connected on just one of their first six shots and turned the ball over 11 times in the first six minutes. Daemen took advantage with a 21-3 run to start the game. The Wildcats later took a 35-10 lead following a 10-foot jumper by Beverly with 9:58 left in the half. A pretty behind the back pass from Sheehan led to a layup by Regan with 7:30 left in the half, giving the Wildcats a 46-17 lead. Daemen took a 59-22 lead into intermission.

Daemen assisted on 15 of its 21 field goals and posted a commanding 33-14 advantage in rebounding (12 offensive) in the first half. Sheridan connected on just 8-of-30 shots in the first half and committed 18 turnovers, which Daemen converted into a 23-2 edge in points off turnovers in the first half.

Daemen outscored the Bruins 15-7 over the first five minutes of the second half. A breakaway dunk by Sheehan capped the run and gave Daemen a 74-29 lead. The Wildcats held a 90-37 lead with 10 minutes left and a 101-47 advantage with five minutes left.

The Wildcats shot 49-percent (39-80) overall and connected on 7-of-20 three-pointers. Daemen also finished with a commanding 62-35 advantage in rebounding (27 offensive) that led to a 58-24 edge in points in the paint. Daemen forced 30 turnovers, which resulted in a 39-6 advantage in points off turnovers.

Daemen travels to Salem, W. Va. this weekend to take part in the Joe Manchin Classic hosted by Salem International University. The Wildcats will face the host Salem International Tigers Friday (Dec. 7) at 7 p.m. and tipoff against Newberry College Saturday (Dec. 8) at 5 p.m. Both SIU and Newberry are NCAA Division II members.
