USCAA Power Maine-Fort Kent Squeaks Past Daemen

9/27/2012 7:12:00 PM

Box Score AMHERST, NY - The Daemen Wildcats' attempt to knock off the two-time defending USCAA National Champions came up just a bit short today.  The Maine-Fort Kent Lady Bengals(2-0-0) got a goal from freshman Katherine Ferland in the 100th minute to break a 1-1 tie and send the visitors out of Dimp Wagner Stadium with the victory.  The loss is Daemen's first setback of the season (2-1-0) after opening the year with back-to-back wins.

The Lady Bengals entered today's game as winners of 18 straight and 33 of their last 34 dating back to 2010.  Megan Perry gave them the lead with a goal in the 42nd minute off a feed from Kayla Richards.  Perry's high shot from the left wing reached the far top corner of the goal, giving UMFK the edge after a somewhat evenly played first half.

Daemen knotted the score after junior Samantha Engel (Dryden, NY/Dryden HS) took a pass in stride from senior Kelsey O'Leary (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia HS) and launched her shot low and past Bengal goalkeeper Kimika Forbes in the 79th minute.

In the overtime period, Daemen's Kayla Hampton (DeRuyter, NY/DeRuyter HS) thwarted two scoring chances from the Bengals' Theresa Biggs.  Hampton stood her ground and made two solid saves on legitimate scoring chances.  Sandwiched in between UMFK's chances was a low hard shot by Daemen's Alexa Amato (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island HS) that was saved by Forbes.

Then, with under a minute remaining in the overtime period, Ferland struck her golden goal, taking a pass from Victoria DuBois-Iredale and putting the shot low and past Hampton who came racing out of her net.

The contest was the first of three meetings this season for these teams.  They'll meet again on consecutive days up in Fort Kent, ME (Sept. 29-30).

The Wildcats get back in action next weekend when they travel to Rochester, NY for two games at the Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks Classic.  Daemen faces NAIA foes Spring Arbor (Fri. Sept. 7) and Rio Grande (Sat. Sept. 8).
