Box Score FORT KENT, ME - For the second time this season the Daemen Wildcats found themselves on the sour end of a one-goal decision against the defending USCAA National Champions. The Maine-Fort Kent Lady Bengals survived a focused Daemen squad for the second time this season, taking today's matinee affair 3-2. The Lady Bengals, who also defeated Daemen 2-1 in overtime at Dimp Wagner Stadium on Sept. 2, won their 26th consecutive game an improved to 10-0 on the season while Daemen drops to 3-5.
Freshman defender
Meghan Lipinoga (N. Tonawanda, NY/N. Tonawanda HS) got the Wildcats on the board first with the first goal of her career. Lipinoga headed in a corner kick off the foot of junior
Samantha Engel (Dryden, NY/Dryden HS) in the 21st minute to put Daemen ahead.
UMFK responded with a goal by Katherine Ferland in the 38th minute. Ferland, a freshman and the leading points scorer in the USCAA so far this season, tucked a low shot into the Daemen net and the teams went to halftime tied at 1-1.
As a steady mist of rain fell at the onset of the second half, UMFK's Megan Perry knocked in a rebound just 43 seconds into the period, putting the Lady Bengals in front for the first time today.
Daemen would get the equalizer from junior
Alexa Amato (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island HS). In the 69th minute, Amato took a feed from freshman
Ashley Griffin (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park HS) and beat the sprawling goalkeeper with a low shot.
After trading quality scoring opportunities, Ferland put home the eventual game-winner for the Lady Bengals in 80th minute, scoring on a set piece off a free kick from 20 yards out. Theresa Biggs picked up the assist on the play for UMFK.
"We played very well and the result could have gone either way," said Daemen head coach
Dan Dolan. "The game was very even. We'll be ready again tomorrow."
The same two teams meet again tomorrow in Fort Kent at 11am.
