Women's Volleyball Goes Undefeated In Pool Play

CANTON, N.Y.- The third-seeded Daemen College women's volleyball team finished a perfect 4-0 in pool play at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships, capping the day with a victory over the top-seeded Marygrove College Mustangs after defeating the University of Cincinnati at Clermont College Cougars in their opening match of the day.
 
Both matches (25-12, 25-19 over the Cougars; 25-17, 25-19 over the Mustangs) were straight-set victories. With the two wins, Daemen has now won nine straight matches, which is a season-high winning streak for the Wildcats.
 
Seniors Kaley Vazquez (Kenmore, N.Y./Kenmore West), Brittany Anthon (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) and Paige Tilert (Derby, N.Y./Lake Shore) and juniors Ye Wang (Beijing, China/Hachioji Jissen) and Chelsea Turcer (Alexander, N.Y./Alexander Central) were instrumental in Daemen's two wins today.
 
Against UC-Clermont, Vazquez led Daemen with 14 assists, while Turcer posted 12 in that same category. The duo tied for the team lead in helpers versus Marygrove, as each notched 12 in the day's second match. All told, Vazquez had 26 assists today to pace the Wildcats, while Turcer followed up with 24 of her own.
 
Tilert led the Wildcats with a total of 23 digs on the day (11 vs. UC-Clermont, 12 vs. Marygrove), while Wang collected a team-high 20 kills over the course of the two matches (nine against the Cougars, 11 against the Mustangs). Anthon chipped in a pair of strong all-around performances, posting five kills and eight digs against UC-Clermont and three kills and 10 digs against Marygrove for a sum of 11 kills and 18 digs on the day.
 
Having advanced out of pool play, Daemen will move on to face fourth-seeded SUNY Canton Kangaroos in the opening elimination round (quarterfinals) at 5:30 p.m. today. SUNY Canton, who is hosting the tournament, finished 1-3 in pool play and fourth in Pool B, while Daemen finished first in Pool A with their unblemished 4-0 mark.
