AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's soccer team defeated the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown 2-0 today at Dimp Wagner Stadium. Freshman Alex Reid (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) locked in the two goals for Daemen helping the Wildcats snap a four game losing skid. With the win, Daemen improves to 3-6 on the season while UPJ drops to 2-6.
The two teams played through a scorless first half that saw Daemen put five of its eleven shots on goal on the scoresheet.
Reid scored an unassisted goal in the 55th minute to put the Wildcats up 1-0. Two minutes later he struck again as he tallied in a shot to the back of the net off a pass from teammate Caleb Holmes (Cuba, N.Y./Cuba-Rushford) which gave the Wildcats a 2-0 victory.
The Wildcats controlled the game with plenty of strong tackling, crisp passing, and exciting scoring chances . Daemen fought hard to control the midfield and were ultimately successful, forcing the Mountain Cats to alter their game plan. Daemen fired 22 total shots in the game and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
"I thought our guys played with good tempo," said head coach Mark Spacone. "They worked hard to deserve this win today."
Junior goalkeeper Matt Daddario (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) made two saves to pick up his first career shutout and the win for Daemen.
The Wildcats will look to keep the momentum rolling when they travel to Old Westbury, N.Y. to face off against the New York Institute of Technology in East Coast Conference action this Friday (Oct. 4).
