AMHERST, N.Y. - The University of Maine-Fort Kent women's soccer team has lost exactly two games in their last 37 outings, both of which have come against Daemen College after the Wildcats scored a 2-0 win over the Lady Bengals today at Dimp Wagner Stadium. The two teams last met in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Championship Game last November, a game Daemen won 1-0 in overtime, snapping the Lady Bengals' 33-game unbeaten streak. Daemen improved to 2-0 this season with the win, while UMFK dropped to 2-1.
Senior striker
Samantha Engel (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) scored a goal and notched an assist to lead the way. With six points in two games already this season, she now was 81 career points in 59 games played.
"We started out a little sloppy, but we picked it up in the second half and we were able to capitalize on a couple of corner kicks," said fifth-year head coach
Dan Dolan. "Our backs were tremendous again. We must have won 30 headers in the midfield today which helped our cause immensely."
After a scoreless first half, Engel put Daemen on the board bending a corner kick over the outstretched arms of UMFK goalkeeper Kimika Forbes and into the far corner of the net in the 60th minute.
Later, in the 66th minute, Engel struck another corner kick, this one finding the awaiting foot of junior midfielder
Juli Prentice (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) who one-timed a shot through traffic from six yards out into the net, putting Daemen ahead by two. Prentice's tally, the second of her career, marked just the third time the Lady Bengals have surrendered two goals in their last 37 games - two of which have come against Daemen. It was also the first time that UMFK has faced a two-goal deficit since a 3-0 loss to The Master's College (Calif.) on Nov. 20, 2010 in the opening round of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Tournament.
Two goals was all Daemen would need. Dolan switched his team into to a more defensive posture in the final 20 minutes of the contest to hold UMFK at bay.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper
Kathryn Haessner (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) made nine saves to earn the win and her first career solo shutout. For the Wildcats, it was their also their sixth shutout in their last seven outings dating back to last season.
The backs in front of Haessner stood strong once again as well. The trio of
Hannah Fraser (Milton, Vt./Milton),
Meghan Lipinoga (N. Tonawanda, N.Y./Canisius College) and
Meghan Diehl (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) were instrumental in the shutout, specifically with the physical style of play they brought against UMFK's top player, sophomore Katherine Ferland, who totaled 34 goals as part of a 75-point season last year.
The Wildcats are back in action next Wednesday, Sept. 11 when they hit the road for the first time this season, traveling across state lines to face Edinboro University in Edinboro, Pa. The Fighting Scots were ranked sixth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Preseason Poll and are coming off a 13-4-3 season in 2012. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
