AMHERST, N.Y. - A first-half goal by senior
Juli Prentice (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden) stood up as the difference-maker as the Daemen College women's soccer team secured a 1-0 defeat of visiting Alfred University today in non-conference action under the lights at Dimp Wagner Stadium.
Prentice scored on a header in the 13th minute of the contest when freshman back
Rose Carboni (Endicott, N.Y./Union Endicott) found her on a corner kick. Â It was Prentice's first goal of the season and the sixth of her four-year career.
Daemen blitzed the Saxons and controlled the play throughout the majority of the game as evidenced by a 33-5 disparity in total shots. Â Daemen placed 19 shots on goal in the contest compared to just three for the guests.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Kathryn Haessner (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) made her first start since Oct. 7 and made three stops to earn her second shutout of the season. Â She had missed the Wildcats' previous four outings while recovering from an injury.
Alfred's Sammy Jo Shanahan stood on her head at times to keep the Saxons in it. Â Shanahan totaled 16 saves in the contest, including one on a Daemen penalty kick attempt in the 56th minute.
The win snapped a four-game slide for Daemen as the Wildcats improve to 4-11-1 on the season. Â Alfred, of NCAA Division III and the Empire 8 Conference, drops to 3-13-2 as the Saxons were kept winless in their last 11 games.
Daemen returns to East Coast Conference action this Friday, Oct. 31 when they play host to New York Institute of Technology in a 8:30 p.m. clash on All Hallow's Eve.
