Second-Half Rally Lifts Women's Soccer Past Medaille

Kozub Nets Game-Winner On Penalty Kick

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Sophomore Cassidy Kozub (West Seneca, N.Y./Orchard Park) scored on a penalty kick in the 68th minute to help deliver a 3-2 victory for the Daemen College women's soccer team over host Medaille College today at Johnnie B. Wiley Stadium.  Kozub's tally, her second in as many games, helped the Wildcats fully erase a 2-1 halftime deficit as Daemen snapped an eight-game winless streak to move to 3-7-1 on the season.  Medaille had their four-game winning streak broken and dropped to 4-6 overall.

Freshman Alexis Ruggiero (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) got Daemen on the board with the first goal of her career, scoring an assisted tally in the 37th minute.

But, Medaille would strike twice before halftime, the first of which came off the foot of Mackenzie Berger - her second goal of the year - on a feed from Alyssa Unterborn.  Moments later, in the 45th mintue, Unterborn notched her first goal of the season when she scored on a penalty kick to put the Mavericks ahead.  Unterborn's goal came against backup goalkeeper Jess Wisniewski (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta) who came in to relieve starter Kathryn Haessner (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) who left with an injury late in the period.

Daemen responded in the second half, tying things up on the first career goal of sophomore Alexis Koral (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville North) in the 67th minute when she burried her opportunity off a pass from senior co-captain Rachael Banasik (Depew, N.Y./Depew).

That set the stage for Kozub's heroics just a little more than a minute later.  Her game-winner helped Daemen improve to 4-0 all-time against Medaille.

Wisniewski filled in admirably for Haessner between the pipes, making three saves to earn her first collegiate victory.

Daemen controlled the pace of play for much of the game, launching 34 total shots in the contest, 18 of which were on frame.  Medaille's Rachel Meier was tested often and made 15 stops to help the Mavs keep it close.

Daemen looks to make it two-in-a-row when they host longtime rival Roberts Wesleyan College this Saturday, October 11 at Dimp Wagner Stadium in an East Coast Conference affair, with game time set for 12:30 p.m.
