SPARKILL, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's tennis team suffered its second consecutive loss today as the Wildcats dropped a 7-2 decision to host St. Thomas Aquinas College in East Coast Conference action. Daemen had entered this weekend's action on a two-match win streak but today's result drops the Wildcats to 7-14 overall and 1-4 in ECC play this season. STAC picked up its second conference win of the season (2-4) and improved to 7-11 overall.
"I thought we played pretty well in singles and it's nice to see that we can compete in the ECC in just our first year in the league," said first-year head coach
Stephen Beatty. "I am looking forward to our remaining matches and excited to see this team keep improving."
The doubles pair consisting of sophomores
Zach Kinnaird (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) and
Gregory Lowe (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) got Daemen on the board, defeating STAC's Mike Tasaro and Dan Maysonet in a tightly contested match at No. 3 doubles, winning 9-7.
Despite Beatty's endorsement of their strong play, the Wildcats could only break through in one singles match. Freshman
John Wilson (Seneca Falls, N.Y./Mynderse) was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Tasaro in the No. 6 singles slot to account for Daemen's second point of the match.
After a day off on Sunday, Beatty's squad will closeout their 2013-14 season by hosting Edinboro University in a non-conference affair on Monday (10 a.m.) before battling ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Tuesday (4 p.m.). Both matches are slated to be outdoors at Park Country Club.
