CLINTON, N.Y. - Led by the runner-up finishes of senior Zac Ekdahl (Middlesex, N.Y./Marcus Whitman) and sophomore Alex Reid (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport), the Daemen College men's indoor track and field team officially kicked off its 2014-15 season today at the Hamilton College Invitational held at Scott Field House.
Ekdahl, a veteran member of the squad who recently completed his fourth year on Daemen's cross country team as well, finished in second place in the 1000-meter run, completing the race in 2:46.89, putting him two seconds off the pace set by race-winner Jonathan Stanhope (2:44.69) of the host Hamilton Continentals. Â Ekdahl added a 14th-place showing in the 400-meter dash as well (54.07 seconds).
Reid, who took the region by storm last spring with his versatile efforts in both sprints and jumps, got the season started quickly again with his second-place finish in the long jump after leaping 6.23 meters. Â Only Alec Swider of Mohawk Valley Community College was better with a jump of 6.35 meters. Â Reid added a 12th-place finish in the 200-meter dash as well (23.87 seconds).
Daemen got additional top-10 finishes from Jeremy Rushok (Akron, N.Y./Buffalo State College), Niko Jemmison (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Technical), Nigel Cordulla (Cheektowaga, N.Y./John F. Kennedy), Zach Eustance (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton), Matt McCann (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) and Patrick Dorsey (Cheektowaga, N.Y./John F. Kennedy).
Rushok, another veteran member of the squad, came in sixth place in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:30.83. Â He was joined by Eustance and McCann who earned their respective top-10 finishes in another long distance race. Â Eustance (9:40.40) finished in ninth place in the 3000-meter run with McCann (9:48.49) on his heels for 10th place.
Jemmison's top-10 came in sprints as the sophomore came in seventh place in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:12.96. Â Cordulla did his damage in mid-distance, finishing in seventh place in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:53.35. Â Cordulla added a 12th-place performance in the mile run as well (4:55.24).
Dorsey, a freshman, picked up the first top-10 finish of his career and it came in the shot put. Â He launched it 11.95 meters which was good for 10th place.
Daemen returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 7 with a trip to Brockport, N.Y. for the Golden Eagle Invite hosted by The College At Brockport.
