BOX SCOREROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's tennis team suffered a 6-2 setback today against Rochester Institute of Technology in non-conference action at Mendon Tennis Center. The match represented Daemen's spring season opener. After going 4-1 in the abbreviated fall season, Daemen drops to 4-2 overall this year while RIT jumped to 2-1.
Daemen picked up a point in doubles action to start the match as the team of
Joey Gentile (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagara University) and
Adam Kerr (Penfield, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) defeated RIT's Amos Baptiste and Jason Alexander, 8-6, in a hotly contested affair in the No. 2 doubles slot.
At No. 3 doubles, RIT's Kenneth Chou and Frank McGinn III squeaked by Daemen's
Gregory Lowe (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and
Ethan Wincowski (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) by a final score of 9-7, giving the host Tigers a 2-1 lead heading into singles action.
In singles, only the Wildcats'
Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) could breakthrough to score a point. Veitengruber, a 6-foot freshman, won his match in the No. 1 singles slot, 6-1, 6-3, over Kevin Layer.
Gentile pushed the first set of his No. 2 singles match past the norm, but eventually fell to Baptiste, 7-5, 6-2. Sophomore
John LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) took his No. 4 singles match with RIT's Alexander to a third set, but also fell, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Daemen is back in action with another non-league tilt at Le Moyne College on Sunday, Mar. 1 at 2:30 p.m.
