AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's soccer team suffered a 3-1 defeat today at Dimp Wagner Stadium to visiting Lake Erie College in non-conference action.
With the loss, Daemen (0-3-0) is still seeking its first win of the year, while the Storm (1-2-0) jumped into the win column for the first time in 2015.
Daemen got on the board first when junior midfielder
Alexis Koral (Williamsville, N.Y./William Smith College) netted her first goal of the season at the 13:53 mark. Â Koral one-touched a crossing feed from sophomore forward
Stephanie Zurales (Woodridge, Ill/Downers Grove South).
But, the Storm responded shortly thereafter when Alecia Dipre scored on a free kick from just outside the top of the box. Â Lake Erie attempted some trickery on the play as the ball was first approached by striker Elizabeth Awuah, but as she bypassed it the Daemen wall moved ever so slightly, opening up an avenue for Dipre who approached the ball second, struck it and scored to knot the score at 1-1.
After going to halftime tied, Lake Erie went ahead on a goal by Ashley Price at the 50:40 mark. Â Price found herself open at the top of the box and took a line-drive shot that reached the back of the goal.
Daemen got a golden opportunity to draw even when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 77th minute when Zurales was hauled down in the box. Â Sophomore back
Rose Carboni (Endicott, N.Y./Union Endicott), who scored on a penalty kick earlier this week versus Le Moyne College, was again coach
Dan Dolan's choice to make the attempt. Â This time, Lake Erie goalkeeper Marissa Brannon was up to the challenge, going horizontal in a dive to her left to make the save, preserving the Storm's one-goal lead.
Soon after, it was Lake Erie that was awarded a penalty kick, and Awuah made good on the attempt at the 82:46 mark to put the Storm up by two, providing the final margin.
Brannon turned away seven Daemen shots on goal to pick up the win. Â Her counterpart, Daemen's
Meaghan O'Leary (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) went the distance for the third-straight game, matching a season-high with eight saves.
Koral's goal in the first half was her first tally since October 7 of last year when she scored during a 3-2 road victory at Medaille College. Â Zurales' assist today gives her points in two of Daemen's three games this season, and in four of her last six outings dating back to the end of last season.
Daemen looks to right the ship when former American Mideast Conference rival Walsh University, now a Division II member and affiliate of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, comes to town this Sunday, September 13 in the Cavaliers' first visit to Dimp Wagner Stadium since October 11, 2011, a 5-1 Daemen win.
