Veitengruber Leads Men's Tennis At ITA East Regional Tournament

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Sophomore Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) went 5-1 and advanced to the finals of the "B" Singles bracket at the 2015 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional Tournament hosted by University of the Sciences over the weekend.

Veitengruber opened his impressive run by defeating Tom Knight of Assumption College, 6-2.  He then added a 6-3 second-round victory over Assumption's Jake Zylak.  A 6-2 win over Brian Kavanaugh of Saint Anselm College in the round of 16 catapulted the second-year Wildcat into the quarterfinal round.

In the quarters, Veitengruber kept things going by defeating Lars Olson from Concordia College (N.Y.), 6-3.  That win placed Veitengruber in the semifinals where he defeated Marcus Lawrence of Franklin Pierce University, 8-5, for a berth in the finals, becoming the first Daemen player to advance that far at this annual event which brings together numerous NCAA Division II programs from the East Region.

It was in the finals that Veitengruber's run came to an end, however, falling to Pierre Kohler of Chestnut Hill College, 8-2.

Daemen's Andrew LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda), a redshirt-freshman, was also impressive in the "B" Singles draw.  LeMar won three-straight matches before bowing out in the quarterfinals to FPU's Lawrence.  He opened with a 6-1 defeat of Tajay McLeod from the host Sciences, and followed with a 6-1 win over Juan Velosa of Philadelphia University.  A 6-4 win over Roger Almato from Saint Thomas Aquinas College set up with matchup with Lawrence, who won 3-0 when LeMar was forced to retire with an injury.

In doubles play, Daemen picked up a pair of wins in the "B" draw.  LeMar teamed with senior Joey Gentile (East Amherst, N.Y./Niagara University) to win over Sciences' Evan Halperin and Bill Bentley, 8-2.  LeMar's brother, John LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda), teamed with newcomer David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira) to win 8-5 over Saint Anselm's Eric Howes and Adam Weinstein.  Both Daemen duos were erased in the round of 16, however.

Daemen returns to action this weekend (September 26-27) by hosting its own tournament, the Daemen Invitational.
