Women's Soccer Can't Hold Off Le Moyne

AMHERST, N.Y. - An early one-goal lead for the Daemen College women's soccer team would not hold up as the Wildcats dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to visiting Le Moyne College at a hazy, hot and humid Dimp Wagner Stadium this afternoon.

Sophomore back Rose Carboni (Endicott, N.Y./Union Endicott) put Wildcats ahead early in their 2015 home opener, scoring on a penalty kick at the 6:31 mark of the contest.  The penalty kick was awarded when junior midfielder Alexis Koral (Williamsville, N.Y./William Smith College) was hauled down in the box, and Carboni made good on the opportunity, putting home her first goal of the season, and the third of her career.  It was Daemen's first goal via penalty kick since fomer Wildcat Cassidy Kozub (West Seneca, N.Y./Orchard Park) scored on one in a 3-2 victory over Medaille College on October 7, 2014.

But, Le Moyne grew increasingly more comfortable as the game wore on with Daemen clinging to that one-goal advantage.  The Dolphins notched the equalizer at the 74:32 mark when Samantha Ciulla's corner kick found the head of Kelly Ristoff who had streaked into the center of the box on a Le Moyne set piece.

Later, on another Le Moyne corner kick, after a brief scrum in the box, the ball found its way to the foot of Rachel Terry who burried a shot inside the far post to put Le Moyne ahead with just over five minutes remaining in regulation.

The Dolphins held off the Wildcats down the stretch, including a corner kick from Carboni in the 89th minute which found the head of Stephanie Zurales (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South), but the sophomore striker's header attempt went wide.

With the loss, Daemen dropped to 0-2 on the young season while Le Moyne evened its record at 1-1.  The loss snapped the Wildcats' string of five-straight wins in home openers.

Tori Corsaro made six saves to earn the victory between the pipes for the Dolphins.  Her counterpart, Daemen freshman Meaghan O'Leary (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island), made eight saves in a losing effort.

In the second-ever meeting between Daemen and Le Moyne, today's result marked the second-straight year that the Dolphins have escaped Dimp Wagner Stadium with a one-goal win.  Ristoff netted the game-winner last September 9, giving Le Moyne a 1-0 win in overtime.

Daemen will look to jump into the win column when they host Lake Erie College in a non-conference affair this Friday, September 11.
