AMHERST, N.Y. - An early one-goal lead for the Daemen College women's soccer team would not hold up as the Wildcats dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to visiting Le Moyne College at a hazy, hot and humid Dimp Wagner Stadium this afternoon.
Sophomore back
Rose Carboni (Endicott, N.Y./Union Endicott) put Wildcats ahead early in their 2015 home opener, scoring on a penalty kick at the 6:31 mark of the contest. Â The penalty kick was awarded when junior midfielder
Alexis Koral (Williamsville, N.Y./William Smith College) was hauled down in the box, and Carboni made good on the opportunity, putting home her first goal of the season, and the third of her career. Â It was Daemen's first goal via penalty kick since fomer Wildcat
Cassidy Kozub (West Seneca, N.Y./Orchard Park) scored on one in a 3-2 victory over Medaille College on October 7, 2014.
But, Le Moyne grew increasingly more comfortable as the game wore on with Daemen clinging to that one-goal advantage. Â The Dolphins notched the equalizer at the 74:32 mark when Samantha Ciulla's corner kick found the head of Kelly Ristoff who had streaked into the center of the box on a Le Moyne set piece.
Later, on another Le Moyne corner kick, after a brief scrum in the box, the ball found its way to the foot of Rachel Terry who burried a shot inside the far post to put Le Moyne ahead with just over five minutes remaining in regulation.
The Dolphins held off the Wildcats down the stretch, including a corner kick from Carboni in the 89th minute which found the head of
Stephanie Zurales (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South), but the sophomore striker's header attempt went wide.
With the loss, Daemen dropped to 0-2 on the young season while Le Moyne evened its record at 1-1. Â The loss snapped the Wildcats' string of five-straight wins in home openers.
Tori Corsaro made six saves to earn the victory between the pipes for the Dolphins. Â Her counterpart, Daemen freshman
Meaghan O'Leary (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island), made eight saves in a losing effort.
In the second-ever meeting between Daemen and Le Moyne, today's result marked the second-straight year that the Dolphins have escaped Dimp Wagner Stadium with a one-goal win. Â Ristoff netted the game-winner last September 9, giving Le Moyne a 1-0 win in overtime.
Daemen will look to jump into the win column when they host Lake Erie College in a non-conference affair this Friday, September 11.
