FULL RESULTSGENEVA, Ohio - The Daemen College men's indoor track & field team opened their 2015-16 season today at the SPIRE North Coast Indoor Track and Field Open held at SPIRE Institute along with nine other teams.
The Wildcats saw two team records fall on the track as freshman sprinter
Jonny Schmidt (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence) and junior sprinter
Niko Jemmison (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Generation) ran to benchmark times in the 400-meter and 200-meter dashes, respectively. Schmidt finished ninth in the 400m with his record-setting time of 53.66 seconds, while Jemmison finished seventh in the 200m at 23.48 seconds. Jemmison added a sixth-place finish in the 60-meter dash as well (7.29 seconds).
Sophomore thrower
Zach Laird (Alexander, N.Y./Alexander Central) competed in both weight throw and shot put at today's meet where he placed fourth in both events for the Wildcats. Laird launched the shot put 12.15 meters while reaching 12.50 meters in the weight throw. Fellow throwers
Jonathan Dygert (Springville, N.Y./Springville-Griffith) and
Andrew Strobele (Akron, N.Y./Akron) also competed, placing sixth and seventh, respectively, in both events.
Junior jumper/sprinter
Hunter Berry (Colden, N.Y./Springville-Griffith Institute) competed in the long jump placed fourth with a distance of 6.01 meters.
Daemen got additional top-10 finishes today from
Tanner Speer (Gasport, N.Y./Grand Island),
Jeremy Rushok (Akron, N.Y./Buffalo State College) and
Matt VanDeMortel (Geneva, N.Y./Geneva). Speer placed sixth in triple jump with a jump of 11.64 meters, while Rushok placed tenth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:16.28. VanDeMortel finished in 10
th place in the 800-meter run as he finished the race with a time of 2:03.13.
Joseph Tracy (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) placed 11
th in the one-mile run with a time of 4:59.34.
The Wildcats return to action on January 30 at 10 a.m. as they travel to Ithaca, N.Y. to compete in the Robert J. Kane Invitational hosted by Cornell University
