Late First-Half Surge Lifts Bears Past Wildcats

Regionally-ranked NYIT Prevails 4-0

AMHERST, N.Y. — Senior Ben Wilson (Southampton, England) totaled two goals and an assist to lead New York Institute of Technology to a 4-0 victory over Daemen College here today in East Coast Conference men's soccer action. NYIT, which is ranked 10th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II East Region poll, is now unbeaten in its last five games and improved to 8-3-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the ECC. Daemen dropped to 2-13-0 overall and 0-7-0 in the league.

The physical game featured a total of 35 fouls (23 by NYIT), six yellow cards and one red card. The Wildcats were forced to play most of the contest down a man after senior forward Colin Edwards (Burlington, Ontario) was ejected after receiving a red card in the 25th minute.

Wilson gave NYIT an early 1-0 lead after he converted a penalty kick just 10:06 into the game, and the Bears secured the win by scoring three times in the final 9:45 of the first half.

Sophomore midfielder Simon-Peter Omooba (London, England) gave NYIT a 2-0 lead with his second goal of the year at 35:15, and Wilson converted another penalty kick just four minutes later. Wilson assisted on the final goal of the first half, as his corner kick with 2:24 left before the break led to a tally by junior midfielder Ion Barbarin Garcia (Pamplona, Spain).

The second half featured limited scoring opportunities at both ends of the pitch. NYIT registered just three second-half shots, while Daemen was held without a shot over the final 45 minutes.

NYIT registered four goals on just four shots on goal. The Bears posted a 13-5 edge in total shots and also finished with a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Neither goaltender registered a save in the game. Freshman Steve Geffert (North Rose, N.Y./North Rose-Wolcott) made his second-straight start between the pipes for the Wildcats. Junior Jonathan Rico (Elmhurst, N.Y.) went the distance for NYIT and recorded his league-leading sixth shutout of the season.

Daemen returns to action Sunday (Oct. 16) when it hosts nationally-ranked Long Island University—Post in a league match. The game will be played at Sweet Home Senior High School in Amherst. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
