Late Goal Lifts Bears Over Wildcats

New York Tech Hands Daemen 1-0 Setback

AMHERST, N.Y. — An unassisted goal by junior midfielder Dina Simonian (Westbury, N.Y.) with 19:24 left in the second half lifted New York Institute of Technology to a 1-0 victory over Daemen College here today in East Coast Conference women's soccer action. NYIT snapped a four match losing streak and improved to 4-5-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the ECC. Daemen dropped to 4-7-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the league.

After an evenly played first half, the visiting Bears controlled play throughout the second half. NYIT appeared to have broken the scoreless tie in the 58th minute, but a goal was waved off after NYIT was whistled for a foul in the Daemen box. The Bears continued the pressure the Wildcats and sent shots off the crossbar and post just minutes after the disallowed goal.

The Bears eventually broke through following Simonian's team-leading fourth goal of the season. NYIT was awarded a free kick following a Daemen foul, and Simonian sent a high shot past DC net minder Jackie Wescott (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) from 20 yards out.

Wescott kept the Wildcats within striking range by making three saves down the stretch, but Daemen was unable to net the equalizer.

NYIT outshot the Wildcats 17-2 in the second half and the visitors finished with a 20-6 advantage in shots for the game. The Bears also posted a 7-1 edge in shots on goal, while both teams attempted one corner kick.

Wescott recorded six saves for Daemen, while sophomore Jesse Sabal (Valley Stream, N.Y.) recorded one save for NYIT en route to her second shutout of the season.

Daemen returns to action Sunday (Oct. 16) when it hosts regionally-ranked Long Island University—Post in a league match. The game will be played at Sweet Home Senior High School in Amherst. Game time is 11 a.m.
