AMHERST, N.Y. — For the second-straight game the Daemen College women's soccer team battled for 90 minutes only to come up just short of a victory.
A goal by sophomore forward Andrea Huntzinger (Stockholm, Sweden) with just 7:41 left in regulation time lifted regionally-ranked Long Island University—Post to a 1-0 victory over the Wildcats today in a game played at Sweet Home High School.
LIU-Post, which is ranked fourth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II East Region poll, extended its unbeaten streak to eight games and improved to 9-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the East Coast Conference. Daemen, which was looking for its first-ever victory over the Pioneers, dropped to 4-8-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the league.
Today's loss came just two days after the Wildcats suffered a 1-0 loss to New York Institute of Technology after the visiting Bears scored with just under 20 minutes left in regulation and held on for the win.
Today's game marked the final home game in the careers of Alexis Koral (Williamsville, N.Y./William Smith College), Kelly DuVall (Addison, N.Y./Addison) and Rose Carboni (Endicott, N.Y./Union Endicott). All three players were honored in a pre-game ceremony.
The game appeared headed for overtime before Huntzinger took a pass from freshman Paige Sherlock (West Islip, N.Y.) and flicked a shot past Daemen netminder Jackie Wescott (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) from inside the Daemen box. It marked the team-leading fifth goal of the year for Huntzinger, a first-team all-conference selection last year as a rookie.
High winds prevailed throughout the match. LIU Post played with the wind in the first half and outshot the Wildcats 15-0 over the first 45 minutes. There was limited action over the first 13 minutes, before the Pioneers erupted for eight shots over the next 13 minutes. Wescott registered five saves during the rally. The visitors also pressured the Daemen net late in the first half, firing five shots over the final 10 minutes. Four of the shots were blocked by the DC defense and one went wide of the net.
Daemen's best chance to score came 10 minutes into the second half, as the Wildcats fired three shots at the LIUP net in the span of three minutes. One shot went high, and the other two were turned away by Pioneer goaltender Hillevi Eklow (Varobacka, Sweden). The Pioneers nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 71st minute, but a header by senior Julia Backman (Morsil, Sweden) was turned away by a Daemen defender.
The visitors finished with a 23-7 advantage in shots for the game. The Pioneers also posted a 10-4 edge in shots on goal, and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Wescott, who entered the game ranked second among all ECC goaltenders in saves, recorded eight saves and has now registered five or more saves in nine of her 13 starts. Eklow recorded four saves for the Pioneers en route to her third-straight (and sixth overall) shutout.
Daemen returns to action next Sunday (Oct. 23) when it travels to nationally-ranked University of Bridgeport for a league match.
