Daemen Offense Ignites In 6-1 Win

Shawish Posts Hat Trick, Freshman Account For Five Goals In Wildcats' Biggest Offensive Outburst Since 2011

TAKOMA PARK, Md. - Freshman forward Ali Shawish (Lackwanna, N.Y./Lackawanna) scored three goals during an offensive explosion for Daemen College in a 6-1 win over host Washington Adventist University in non-conference men's soccer action today.

With the win, Daemen snapped a six-game slide to improve to 2-10-0 on the season.  Both of the Wildcats' wins have come on the road this year.

The host WAU Shock, a dual-member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), falls to 4-5-0 on the season after suffering their second straight defeat to an NCAA Division II opponent.  WAU was coming off a 3-2 double-overtime loss to University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown earlier this week.

The three goals today give Shawish a team-high six this season, the most for a Daemen player since Kyle Clifford netted 10 during the 2013 season, and the most for a Daemen freshman since teammate Alex Reid (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) scored seven times, also in 2013.  Today's "hat trick" was the first for a Daemen player since Clifford pulled it off in a 3-1 road win at Cleary University on October 13, 2013.

Shawish also picked up his first career assist today.  His 13 points this season put him in a tie for seventh among East Coast Conference players.

Senior Cole Beale (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) put Daemen on the board at the 17:37 mark.  It was Beale's third marker off the season and the 11th of his career.

Shawish would make it a 2-0 lead with his first of the day at the 32:21 mark.  The goal would go down as the game-winner, his second of the year.  It was the greenhorn's first tally since September 18.

The Shock would climb back into contention after junior forward Kingsley Nwosu (Bowie, Md.) netted his third goal of the season at the 61:58 mark.

But, less than four minutes later, Daemen freshman Chris Ellis (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) registered the first goal of his career off a feed from Shawish, re-establishing the Wildcats' two-goal advantage.

The floodgates opened from there as Shawish lit the lamp on back-to-back markers in the 71st and 74th minutes.  Forward Connor Pendleton (Wolcott, N.Y./North Rose-Wolcott) added the Wildcats' sixth goal of the game, and the fifth by a Daemen freshman, in the 87th minute.  Redshirt-sophomore Andy Bartz (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca West) and freshman Kamran Salehi (Toronto, Ont./Thompson Collegiate Inst.) picked up assists on the Pendleton goal.  Salehi, who made his collegiate debut earlier this week vs. Roberts Wesleyan College, has now recorded an assist in each of the last two games.

Daemen out-shot the Shock 17-10 in the game, while also limiting the hosts to just two shots on goal.  Sophomore goalkeeper Justin Figler (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) needed to make just one save to pick up his second win of the season.  His counterpart, senior Jordhon Horelien (Greenbelt, Md.) was tested more often, making five saves in defeat.

The six-goal outburst was the most for Daemen since an 11-0 whitewash of Fisher College on October 29, 2011, back in the Wildcats' final season as an NAIA member and affiliate of the now-defunct American Mideast Conference.

Daemen looks to make it a 2-0 road trip to the Washington, D.C. area when they return to East Coast Conference play tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 8) by locking up with University of the District of Columbia.  Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Longbridge Park in Arlington, Va.
