Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Wildcats Fall In First-Ever Exhibition With Division I Opponent

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's soccer team ran into a buzz-saw tonight, falling to the University at Buffalo 9-0 before a sizable crowd on a picture-perfect summer evening at UB Stadium.  The game marked Daemen's first-ever matchup with an NCAA Division I opponent, and although it counts only as an exhibition for the Wildcats, the game was UB's regular season opener as they improve to 1-0.

UB's Russell Cicerone (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), the reigning Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, put on a show, scoring five goals and adding an assist to lead the Bulls.  In doing so, he set the Bulls' team record for goals in a game.

After a bit of a slow start, UB's Austin Place (Edmond, Okla.) put the hosts on top with his shot from just inside the box which found its way to the back of the net.

Then, Cicerone opened things up with three straight tallies, scoring on headers in the 29th and 34th minutes, before adding a traditional strike to the lower right corner in the 40th minute.  The game took a turn after Daemen's senior sweeper Austin Stephany (Watkins Glen, N.Y./University at Buffalo) went off with an injury.  He would return later, but the Bulls would take a 4-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Braden Scales (Lockport, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the second half in the 47th minute when Cicerone sent a crossing feed which Scales neatly volleyed into the right side of the goal.

Cicerone put home his fourth marker of the night just moments later with a shot to the lower right corner, and set the new benchmark with his tally in the 81st minute.

The Bulls got additional second-half goals from Rikard Lindqvist (Stockholm, Sweden) and Ryan Aspenleiter (Pittsford, N.Y.).

The highlight of the night for Daemen came in the 57th minute when sophomore goalkeeper Justin Figler (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) stoned Cicerone on a penalty kick attempt.

The Daemen defense was under constant pressure for the entirety of the game.  UB racked up 19 corner kicks and, all told, Figler faced 30 shots, 18 of which were on frame.  The second-year net-minder, who finished second in the East Coast Conference in total saves last season, turned away nine shots on the evening.

Daemen posted six total shots, placing three on frame, including two off the foot of senior midfielder Logan Podrebarac (Burlington, Ont./Tiffin University).  All three shots on goal were turned aside by UB goalkeeper Joseph Kuta (Mississauga, Ont.) who went the distance to record the shutout.

Daemen opens its 2016 regular season next Thursday, September 1 when the Wildcats play host to Lock Haven University of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference at their new home venue - The Park School of Buffalo Field.  Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
