Men's Soccer Falters In Regular Season Opener

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's soccer team could not overcome an early 2-0 deficit today, falling 3-1 in non-conference action to Lock Haven University in both teams' 2016 regular season opener at the Park School Field.

LHU's Troy Amspacher (Lancaster, Pa.), who finished fifth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference with 21 points last season, scored twice today to lead the Bald Eagles to their first win in a season opener since 2013.

Amspacher got the guests on the board at the 10:17 mark, taking a long lead pass through the Daemen defense from midfielder Tyler Shumaker (Erie, Pa.) and beating Daemen goalkeeper Justin Figler (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) with a low shot after Figler came racing out off his perch to cut down the angle.  Amspacher's shot reached the back of the net, just inside the right post.

Just moments later, the Bald Eagles put together a nice string of tic-tac-toe-like passing as Shumaker found senior forward Tyler Sablyak (Doylestown, Pa.) on the right wing, and Sablyak's crossing feed was neatly volleyed into an open net by Zach Hommey (Woodsboro, Md.).  The goal put LHU ahead by two just 11:48 into the contest.

Daemen battled back, gaining better possession after falling behind.  The up-tick in possession resulted in more scoring chances, none better than a penalty kick which was awarded after a Daemen player was hauled down in the box at the 31:32 mark of the first half.  But, Logan Podrebarac's (Burlington, Ont./Tiffin University) attempt was thwarted by LHU net-minder Troy Teresak (Pompton Plains, N.J.)  Shortly thereafter, freshman Connor Pendleton (Wolcott, N.Y./North Rose-Wolcott) had a relatively open net to shoot at, but his attempt sailed wide at the 37:32 mark.

The Wildcats would get another decent chance to get on the scoreboard at the start of the second half, but freshman Ali Shawish (Lackwanna, N.Y./Lackawanna) sent a free kick from 35 yards out just wide of the net.

LHU would capitalize as Amspacher netted his second goal of the game at the 55:06 mark, putting the Bald Eagles comfortably ahead 3-0.  The senior forward got taken down inside the Daemen box, earning himself a penalty kick opportunity which he cashed in.

Daemen fought valliantly down the stretch, but couldn't cut into the LHU lead.  That is until freshman Nate Louk (Jane Lew, W. Va./Lewis County) scored his first career goal with just two seconds remaining on the game clock to help the Wildcats avoid the shutout.

Shots in the game ended up virtually even with LHU placing six of its 10 attempts on frame, while Daemen mustered three shots on goal out of six total attempts.  Teresak turned away two Wildcat shots on goal to pick up the win for the Bald Eagles.  Figler made three stops in losing effort for the Wildcats.

The game marked the official opening of Daemen's new home venue - the Park School Field - although work is ongoing to continue the facility's development.

Daemen returns to home action this Saturday, September 3 against non-conference foe Ashland University.  That game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
