For Communications Men's Soccer Crossed Up By Vulcans AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's soccer team fell to 0-4-0 on the season after suffering a 3-0 non-conference defeat to the visiting California University (Pa.) Vulcans at Park School Field this afternoon. After a scoreless opening period, Cal got on the board with a pair of goals in the first 16 minutes of the second half before salting away their sixth straight regular season win, dating back to last season.  The win moves the Vulcans to 3-0-0 thus far in 2016 after being picked sixth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference preseason poll. Sophomore forward Mike Cummings (McDonald, Pa.) put the guests on the board at the 53:43 mark, less than nine minutes into the second stanza, when he volleyed Cory Kuzilla's (Harborcreek, Pa.) corner kick into the net at the far post. Less than seven minutes later, defender Kyle Richards (Coatesville, Pa.) carried up the left side and sent a crossing feed into the box where it was touched on by Eric Campbell (Erie, Pa.) to Elliott Taylor (Monaca, Pa.), the senior midfielder who came streaking into the box to put home his first tally of the season. In the 69th minute, Daemen nearly cut the deficit in half when freshman Ali Shawish (Lackawanna, N.Y./Lackawanna) got behind the Vulcan defense, but his looping shot over the out-stretched arms of goalkeeper Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany) hit off the cross bar and bounced out of play. The Vulcans would add their third goal in the game's final minute.  Freshman midfielder Oscar Carvajal (Columbus, Ohio) headed home a crossing feed Ahmad Awadalla (Allentown, Pa.) to provide the final margin. Exner, the 2015 PSAC Rookie of the Year and first-team All-PSAC selection, stopped all five shots on goal from the Wildcats to earn his second straight shutout. His counterpart, Daemen's Justin Figler (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island), recorded seven of his eight saves in the first half.  It's his second game of the season with at least eight saves, and Figler now leads the East Coast Conference with 22 total saves this season. Newcomer Colin Edwards (Burlington, Ont./Tiffin University) played strong up top for Daemen, placing al three of his shot attempts on frame, including a strike from just inside the right side of the box which Exner just got a piece of in the 16th minute of the contest. Cal held a 25-11 edge in total shot attempts, 14 of which came after intermission when they began to assert their will on the game's possession.  The game took on a physical tone as well with the teams combining for 40 fouls and four yellow cards. Daemen looks to right the ship tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 11) when they make the short nine-mile jaunt over to D'Youville College for an 11 a.m. contest at Dobson Field.
