Hannah Rice crosses the finish line to come in 1st in her age group and 4th among 193 female competitors today

Rice Wins Age Group At Finger Lakes Triathlon

CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. - Daemen College tri-athlete Hannah Rice (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora), competing in just the second triathlon of her life and her first in a Daemen uniform, won the female 20-24 age group and placed fourth overall out of 193 female competitors at the Finger Lakes Triathlon held here this morning.

Rice, who also competes on the Daemen cross country and track and field teams, completed the sprint-style course in 1:26:30. Rice's time was eight minutes back of the overall female champion, Mae Card, who finished in 1:18:54 while competing in the 25-29 age bracket. The sprint course featured a 0.45-mile open-water swim in Canandaigua Lake, a 13-mile cycling portion and a 3.1-mile run.

Also competing today for Daemen were juniors Jenifer Igoe (Oakfield, N.Y./Oakfield-Alabama) and Nichole Geiger (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park). Igoe came in approximately eight minutes behind Rice (1:34:50) to finish second out of 12 competitors in the 20-24 age group, and 20th overall among female entrants. Geiger completed the course in 1:36:27 to finish third in the same age group and 27th overall.

The sport of triathlon was termed an Emerging Sport For Women by the NCAA in January of 2014, establishing a 10-year window for the formation of 40 intercollegiate programs. At present, according to USA Triathlon which oversees intercollegiate competitions, Daemen is one of 13 schools in the country to sponsor a varsity triathlon program for women.

Daemen next competes at the Deer Creek Fall Challenge in Mt. Sterling, Ohio on September 25.
