FLUSHING, N.Y. - Sophomore back
Monique Green (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) scored the first goal of her career today to help the Daemen College women's soccer team battle to a 1-1 (2OT) tie with Queens College in East Coast Conference action this afternoon at the QC Soccer Field.
With the tie today, Daemen moves to 3-3-2 overall and 1-1-1 in ECC play this season. Â The Wildcats are now unbeaten (2-0-2) in their last four games that have gone to overtime, including a 1-0-2 mark in such games this season. Â The home-standing Knights (2-6-1 overall) picked up their first draw of the season, and they sit tied with Daemen at 1-1-1 in the conference.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore forward Adriana Mendrinos (East Northport, N.Y.) put the hosts on the board at the 54:06 mark, when she converted a penalty kick opportunity after Daemen was whistled for a foul inside the box. Â It marked the Knights' first penalty kick opportunity of the season.
Just a short time later, at the 59:26 mark, Green got her head to a feed from senior midfielder
Kelly DuVall (Addison, N.Y./Addison), knocking the ball off the right goalpost and over the goaline to even up the score. Â The goal came on just the fourth shot attempt of Green's career, and her second of the day. Â DuVall earned her second assist of the season on the play. Â She also assisted on
Sarah Britton's (Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) tally in Daemen's 1-0 win at Tiffin University back on September 11.
With the game knotted at 1-1, Queens managed four shots in the final 30 minutes of regulation, placing one on frame which was turned aside by sophomore net-minder
Jackie Wescott (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South), one of her seven stops on the day. Â Daemen took three shot attempts in the same time frame, including one shot on goal apiece from redshirt-senior midfielder
Alexis Koral (Williamsville, N.Y./William Smith College) and redshirt-freshman back
Lauren Testa (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda). Â QC goalkeeper Nicole Cranny (Abbeyleix, Ireland), a transfer from the University of South Carolina-Aiken, was up to the task on both Wildcat attempts late.
Queens controlled play early in the first overtime period, producing a pair of shots and a corner kick over the first five minutes. Â Wescott made a big save on an attempt by 2015 third-team All-ECC pick Erin Vernillo (Smithtown, N.Y.) in the 94th minute. Â Koral sent a shot high in the 98th minute for the Wildcats' only scoring opportunity of the period.
Possession moved Daemen's way in the second overtime period. Â Freshman midfielder
Lindsay Ciaramella (St. George, Ont./Paris District) sent a shot wide left in the opening minute of the period, before the Wildcats generated a corner kick and another shot attempt from sophomore back
Alex Valenti (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence). Â Valenti's shot was blocked in the 103rd minute.
Wescott went untested through the final 10 minutes of the contest. Â QC generated two shots, both of which sailed wide left, and a corner kick opportunity which went unfulfilled.
The final box score indicates just how evenly played the game was. Â Queens held a slight edge in shot attempts (18-16) and shots on goal (8-7), while Daemen out-nudged the hosts in saves (7-6) and corner kicks (5-4).
The result marked Daemen's second 1-1 (2OT) tie this season, having previously done so in non-conference play vs. Mansfield University on September 14. Â It also marked Daemen's first-ever road tie in East Coast Conference play since joining the league in 2013. Â Daemen is now 2-0-1 in their last three road games dating back to September 10.
The Wildcats closeout the weekend road trip by facing ECC foe Molloy College on Sunday, October 2 at the RVC Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, N.Y. Â It'll mark the Wildcats' first meeting with the Lions since a dramatic 1-0 (OT) victory in Amherst last October.
