For Communications Wildcats' Postseason Hopes Take A Hit With Road Loss FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's soccer team saw its hopes for the program's first postseason berth at the NCAA Division II level take a hit following a 4-0 road loss to Queens College in East Coast Conference action today at the QC Soccer Field. Daemen, which entered today's contest with a grasp on fourth place in the ECC standings, fell to 7-6-1 overall and 3-4-0 in league play with the loss. The Wildcats maintain their fourth-place standing, at least momentarily, as they await a final score from this afternoon's game between third-place N.Y. Institute of Technology (8-4, 3-1 ECC) and fifth-place University of Bridgeport (6-6-2, 2-2-1 ECC). The top four teams in the standings at season's end advance to the ECC Tournament. Daemen holds the head-to-head tie-breaker with two-time defending league champion Bridgeport after their 2-0 defeat of the Purple Knights this past weekend, but UB has a game in hand, and no team with four conference losses has qualified for the ECC Tournament dating back to at least 2006 (as far back as the ECC website lists records for). Queens, which came into today's game averaging just 1.08 goals per game, matched a season-high with four tallies while improving to 3-9-2 overall and 1-5-1 in league play. The Knights picked up just their second shutout of the season, and their first since a 2-0 non-conference road win Sept. 7 at Chestnut Hill College. After a scoreless first half, sophomore Guro Eriksen put the hosts on the board at the 58:50 mark. She took a pass from senior midfielder Haley Gibbons and blasted a shot from just outside the box into the top left corner of the goal. It was Eriksen's team-leading sixth goal of the season. The Knights added some insurance with freshman forward Elya Paolillo's first career goal at the 78:18 mark. Paolillo's shot to the bottom left corner of the goal came on a rebound opportunity. A short time later, senior forward Erin Vernillo netted her fourth goal of the season. She one-timed a pass from Paolillo to the bottom left corner of the goal at the 82:55 mark. Adding insult to injury, the Knights' fourth goal came with just one second remaining in the game as freshman midfielder Hannah Gallivan netted her second of the season. Queens doubled up the Wildcats in shot attempts (18-9), placing eight on frame. Sophomore forward Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y.) led Daemen with four shot attempts, including two shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Nicole Cranny, a third-team All-ECC pick last season, made four saves to pick up the win for Queens. She shared the shutout with freshman Nikoletta Pravatta who came on in relief for the final seven minutes of the game. Both of Daemen's goalkeepers saw action as well. Freshman Katelin White (Lewiston, N.Y.) got the start and made four saves in 80 minutes of action. She came off with an injury and was replaced by classmate Maddie Flores (Seattle, Wash.) who finished out the game. The four goals allowed matched a season-high for Daemen; both have come in ECC road games (previously in a 4-2 loss at NYIT). Daemen came into the contest ranked fifth in the league with a 1.33 goals-against average. Daemen's stretch of four-straight road games to end the regular season continues this Saturday, Oct. 21 with a non-conference clash at Bloomfield College.
