Wildcats Bow To Regionally-Ranked Firebirds

AMHERST, N.Y. - A battle between two of the highest scoring men's soccer teams in the East Coast Conference went the way of the visitors as University of the District of Columbia scored a 4-1 victory over Daemen College today at Karrer Field.

Daemen, which has already won the most games of its NCAA Division II era (since 2013), dropped to 6-10 overall and 2-6 in league play with today's result. The Wildcats entered the game ranked second in total goals (34) and fourth in goals per game (2.27) among ECC teams this season.

UDC, the No. 7 ranked team in the NCAA Division II East Region poll, improved to 12-4 overall and 6-2 in league play. The Firebirds lead the ECC in total goals (41) and goals per game (2.56), and today's offensive output marked their fifth four-goal game of the season.

After a scoreless first half, UDC assumed control with three tallies in the first 25 minutes of the second. Raphael Pacano got the guests on the board with an unassisted tally at the 50:43 mark. Just over eight minutes later, Gabriel Torres scored his league-leading 19th goal of the season off a feed from Jason Mayorga. Pacano struck again with his eighth of the season, finishing off a Torres feed at the 67:54 mark.

Daemen got on the board at the 86:53 mark as Aiden Tolley's (Pittsford, N.Y.) free kick found its way to redshirt senior Alex Reid (Lockport, N.Y.) who knocked it in at the back post for his third goal of the season.

UDC answered just 22 seconds later as Kevin Ortez scored from 10 yards out after a failed Daemen clearing attempt to provide the final margin.

The highly powered Firebirds outshot Daemen 20-6 in the contest, placing 10 shots on frame.

Joao Brusamolin picked up the win between the pipes for UDC, his sixth of the season. He was relieved in the 77th minute by senior Ever Guevara Alvarez who went on to surrender Daemen's lone goal in the contest.

Mike D'Amato (Orchard Park, N.Y.) got his ninth consecutive start in goal for Daemen. He made five saves in over 73 minutes of action before being lifted for fellow freshman Jarrett Lecceadone (Randolph, N.Y.). Lecceadone allowed one goal and made one save while seeing his first action since Sept. 30 at N.Y. Institute of Technology when he also came on in relief of D'Amato.

Today's game marked the final home contest for Daemen this season, and four players - Reid, Shaquille Corrica (New York City, N.Y.), Logan Podrebarac (Burlington, Ont.) and Ross Stewart (Bangor, Northern Ireland) - were honored in a pre-game ceremony.

Daemen's 2017 season concludes with two road games next week, the first of which comes Tuesday, Oct. 24 at Lake Erie College.

GAME NOTES: Reid, who sat out the entire 2016 season with an injury, was playing in the 62nd game of his career...he scored for the first time since doing so in back-to-back games Sept. 16 (at St. Thomas Aquinas) and Sept. 19 (at Gannon)...it was also Reid's first tally in a home game since Oct. 30, 2015 (vs. Dowling)...his goal today was just the fourth this season by a non-freshman for Daemen...with a goal and an assist today, Torres maintained control of the league lead in goals (19), assists (9) and points (47)...D'Amato moved into fifth place among the league leaders in total saves with 37...the Wildcats were without freshman forward Finn Krueger (5 goals,  4 assists this season) who missed his second-straight game with an injury.
