Houghton, a NCAA Division III member of the Empire 8 Conference opened their 2017-2018 campaign today, falling to an 0-1 season mark. Daemen is now 22-10 all-time against NCAA Division III opponents, heading into the spring portion of their schedule 3-1 overall. The win is Daemen's second-straight, both of which have come by identical 9-0 scores. Daemen opened the match by sweeping through doubles play. Senior Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) teamed with freshman Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) to defeat Houghton's Michael Cha and Louis Garcia on the first doubles court. In second doubles, juniors David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain/American International College_ were 8-2 winners over Jake Fisler and Dylan Scherer. And, rookie Tim Georg (Aschaffenburg, Germany/Hanns-Seidel) and junior Justin Milner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) completed the sweep with another 8-2 win in third doubles over Holden Cole and Matthew Greer. Daemen's dominance continued as the match shifted to singles play as all six matchups were decided in straight-sets. The closest match came at the top of the lineup where Ruiz Martinez ousted Garcia 6-4, 75. Ruiz Martinez upped his single's record to an unblemished 3-0 this season. In second singles, Gonzalez Villegas cruised to 6-1, 6-0 win over Cha. Veitenburger picked up his second point of the match with a win in the third singles position, boosting his season mark to 7-2 in singles action. Wilde and Williamson both made it a two-point night personally, winning at their respective positions. Wilde defeated Scherer 6-2, 6-0 on the fourth singles court. Pablo Martinez Hernandez (Huatulco, Mexico/Niagara-Academy) and Williamson complete the shutout with wins in the fifth and sixth singles positions, respectively. Martinez Hernandez was a 6-0, 6-9 winner over Greer, while Williamson also won by scores of 6-0, 6-0 over Cole. Daemen's 2017-2018 season will continue in early February. The full spring schedule will be announced at a later date.
