Men's Tennis Falls In Spring Season Opener

BOX SCORE

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Daemen College men's tennis team returned to action for the first time since early October today, but suffered an 8-1 loss to Hillsdale College in a non-conference dual-match at the Margot V. Biermann Center.

Daemen, which had been idle since a 9-0 shutout victory over Houghton College on Oct. 5, fell to 3-2 this season with today's loss. Hillsdale, a member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, improved to 2-0.

The host Chargers took a 3-0 lead following today's doubles matches. Two of the three points came after tightly-contested matches. Senior Dugan Delp (Toledo, Ohio) teamed with junior John Ciraci (Troy, Mich.) to outlast the Daemen pair of juniors David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) 9-7 in the second doubles position. In third doubles, it was HC's Julien Clouette (Varennes, Qc.) and Michael Szabo (Midland, Mich.) taking an 8-6 decision against DC's Pablo Martinez Hernandez (Huatulco, Mexico) and Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich.).

In singles play, Ruiz Martinez broke through with a point for Daemen in the No. 3 position. The Spaniard, who became Daemen's first-ever All-East Coast Conference honoree last spring, ousted HC's Justin Hyman (Oakland Township, Mich.) in straight sets (7-6, 6-3).

But, the Chargers closed out the match with singles victories from Milan Mirkovic, Charlie Adams (Knoxville, Tenn.), Gabe Katz (South Burlington, Vt.), Ciraci and Delp.

Daemen looks to jump back in the win column when taking on Alma College tomorrow at the Michigan State University Tennis Center.
