The win marked Daemen's first of the spring season as the Wildcats improve to 2-6 in dual matches in 2016-17.  SIU, an independent member of NCAA Division II, dropped to 2-2 with the loss. Teaming together for the first time this season, brothers John LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and Andrew LeMar (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) scored an 8-0 victory in second doubles, as did veteran Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) and greenhorn James Schaab-Rozbicki (Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) in third doubles to help Daemen establish a 2-1 lead in the match.  SIU's Landon Schultz-Zwahr and Christian Manalang squeaked by DC's Fabian Wilde Crimmitschau, Germany/Julius-Motteler) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain/American International College) to help the Tigers avoid a sweep of doubles play. Singles play saw Daemen pick up the three points it needed to secure the victory with relative ease, while also adding a pair of dramatic points for good measure.  Ruiz Martinez took down Manalang in second singles, 6-1, 6-2; Justin Milner (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) blanked SIU's Kevin Musasia in third singles, 6-0, 6-0; and Adam Kerr (Penfield, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner in fifth singles over Antonio Shaw.  Those matches were already in the books as Daemen's David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira) and John LeMar gutted out wins in three sets at first and fourth singles, respectively. Gonzalez Villegas dropped the first set (6-7) in his matchup with Schultz-Zwahr before battling back to take the second (6-3) and third (1-0).  LeMar did the opposite, taking a hotly contested first set 7-6, before dropping the second 6-7. He staved off a match point in the decisive third to win 1-0 and secure the point for the Wildcats. Marcelo Pacheco scored a 6-3, 6-2 win in sixth singles over DC's John Wilson (Seneca Falls, N.Y./Mynderse) to round out the scoring. It was a historically significant match for DC's John LeMar.  Not only did he record his 25th career singles win, his doubles victory gives him 30 for his career to bring him into a tie with Gregory Lowe for the program's all-time lead.
