ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's tennis team suffered a 6-3 defeat today in an East Coast Conference dual match vs. Roberts Wesleyan College.
The loss drops Daemen to 6-16 overall and 0-3 in ECC play this season, and it was their sixth loss by three points or fewer. Â The match, which was postponed from its original schedule date of April 11 due to weather, was Daemen's first since picking up a 7-2 non-league win April 2 at Caldwell University.
The host Redhawks improved to 13-10 overall, while securing their first league win of the season (1-2).  They've now won two-straight matches after losing six in a row from mid-March through early April.
RWC took a 2-1 lead in the match following doubles play.  Daemen got on the board with an 8-4 win on the second doubles court by senior
Adam Kerr (Penfield, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) and freshman
Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany/Julius-Motteler). Â But, the hosts grabbed the remaining two points, including a hotly contested 9-8 win on the first doubles court from Hugo Ball-Greene (Paris, France) and Dennis Barlotta (Holmdel, N.J.) over DC's
David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia/Liceo Frances de Pereira) and
Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain/American International College).
In singles action, Ruiz Martinez continued his hot streak by defeating Barlotta in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) on the No. 3 court. Â The Daemen sophomore now leads the team alone with 10 singles wins this season, breaking a tie with junior
Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich./Rockford). Â Ruiz Martinez has won five-straight singles matches, and eight of his last 10.
Wilde picked up his second point of the match with a three-set win on the fourth singles court, downing RWC's Guilherme Plentz de Liz (Florianapolis, Brazil) 4-6, 6-3, 1-0. Â Wilde pulls into a tie with Veitengruber for second on the team with nine singles victories this season.
But, that's as much as the hosts would surrender. Â RWC picked up points on the first, second, fifth and sixth singles courts to secure the dual-match victory.
Daemen, which is one win shy of tying the team record for wins in a season, gets back to action Friday when league-leading Queens College heads to Amherst.
