PETERSBURG, Fla. - Junior tri-athletes Jenifer Igoe (Oakfield, N.Y./Oakfield-Alabama) and Nichole Geiger (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) each visited the medal stand as the Daemen College women's triathlon team wrapped up its 2016-17 season today at the St. Anthony's Triathlon held in and around Vinoy Park. Today's event, a sprint-course triathlon, featured a 750-meter open-water swim in Tampa Bay, followed by a 20-kilometer cycling portion and a 5-kilometer running portion.  The event featured 596 total competitors and is widely considered one of the top triathlons in the country. Igoe placed 81st overall, and was awarded the first-place medal for the female 20-24 age bracket.  She completed the swimming portion in 14:42, the cycling portion in 37:11 and the running portion in 25:12; add it up along with her transition times and Igoe crossed the finish line today in 1:22:48. Geiger, who placed 98th overall, was awarded the silver medal in the same age bracket.  She ran virtually neck-and-neck with Igoe to start the race, completing the swimming portion just two seconds after Igoe for a time of 14:44.  Geiger's first transition time (4:28) was seven seconds faster than Igoe's (4:35), and she went on the complete the biking portion in 35:40.  That left the 5-kilometer run which Geiger completed in 28:50, good for a final time of 1:25:01. The next closest competitor in the age group was Julia Perry of Tampa who finished 158th overall with a time of 1:29.24.  Jeffrey Zickus, 44, of Atlanta, Ga. topped the field with a time of 1:05:43.  The top female was 45-year old Celia Dubey of Tarpon Springs, Fla. who finished the course in 1:11:29 to come in 11th place overall. The sport of triathlon was termed an Emerging Sport For Women by the NCAA in January of 2014, establishing a 10-year window for the formation of 40 intercollegiate programs.  At present, according to USA Triathlon which oversees intercollegiate competitions, Daemen is one of 13 schools in the country to sponsor a varsity triathlon program for women.
