For Communications Wildcats Battle To 1-1 Draw In 2017 Season Opener AMHERST, N.Y. - A goal from freshman Sam Hanes (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) in the 79th minute evened up the score and paved the way for the Daemen College women's soccer team to pull out a 1-1 tie in double overtime against visiting St. Michael's College at Karrer Field this afternoon. The game marked the season opener for both teams and Daemen's first at Karrer Field since a months long renovation project was completed on the natural grass playing surface. The Wildcats started slowly and were out-shot 6-2 in the opening period. SMC's Madeleine Morse (Brownsville, Vt.) put the visitors on the board just 34 seconds before halftime. A crossing feed from junior midfielder Alex Matteo (Tolland, Conn.) was deflected and it caromed right to the awaiting Morse who buried her shot inside the right corner of the goal. Veteran head coach Dan Dolan, now in his ninth season at the helm, addressed the late first-half goal with his team at the break. "We didn't do a good job of getting rid of the ball. We trapped the ball in the box, and then tried to get it out and there's a deflection. Unfortunately, it's the girl and our keeper that's coming out. It should have never gotten to that," Dolan said after the game. "But the talk after that was 'we're doing some good things, we just have to clean up a few things.'" Things picked up from there for the Wildcats who generated 20 shots and seven corner kick opportunities after the halftime intermission. Freshman midfielder Celia de Pablo Esteban (Burgos, Spain) generated her own opportunity with some slick dribbling skills and a shot from 30 yards out that just went over the crossbar in the 55th minute. Freshman Kaylyn Phillips (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) came off the bench and generated another great scoring chance, but her shot from just inside the left wing was turned away by SMC goalkeeper Megan LeCours (Barre, Vt.). Finally the Wildcats broke through with the first goal of Hanes' career. Sophomore forward Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y.) carried the ball up the right wing and sent a crossing feed to the top of the box where Hanes came through and struck her shot inside the left post to knot the score at the 78:43 mark. In the first overtime period, Daemen out-shot SMC 5-0, but only de Pablo Esteban's attempt in the 94th minute landed on frame. Daemen generated five more shots in the second overtime period, including a pair of solid strikes off the foot of senior forward Alex Juliano (Hambug, N.Y.); one sailed high while LeCours came up with a big stop on the other. SMC rallied and generated four shot attempts of their own in the final five minutes of the period, but freshman net-minder Katelin White (Lewiston, N.Y.) stood tall for the Wildcats and the game ended in a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of action. LeCours was credited with nine saves for the Purple Knights while White made six stops in her first collegiate game to preserve the draw. Daemen ended up with a 22-15 advantage in total shot attempts and a 9-1 edge in corner kick opportunities.  "I thought overall we played really well," Dolan said. "We knocked the ball around really well. We found our midfielders throughout the game. As the game wore on I thought we wore them down a ton, and obviously I thought we deserved the win, but that's how soccer goes sometimes." Daemen continues its four-game home-stand, the longest to open a season in team history, by hosting their second Northeast-10 Conference affiliate in as many games when Le Moyne College comes to Karrer Field this Sunday, Sept. 3 for an 11 a.m. kickoff.
