Phillips' OT Tally Lifts Wildcats Past STAC In ECC Opener

SPARKILL, N.Y. - Freshman forward Kaylyn Phillips (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) pounced on her own rebound and scored in the 98th minute to deliver a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory for Daemen College over host St. Thomas Aquinas College in East Coast Conference women's soccer action at Spartan Field today.

The win, Daemen's third-straight, moves the Wildcats to 3-1-1 on the season, and 1-0 in ECC play. It's the first time that Daemen has won its ECC opener since joining the league back in 2013, and the Wildcats have won three-straight in the all-time series with the Spartans.

STAC, which was picked ninth in the ECC preseason poll, was dealt its first home loss of the season (1-1-1 at home). The Spartans fell to 1-2-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.

The hosts got on the board first as sophomore forward Victoria DiMarco (Hunterville, N.C.) launched a shot from 30 yards out which made its way inside the top corner of the goal at the 8:18 mark. Freshman forward Sarah Colotti (Newburgh, N.Y.) picked up an assist on the play.

The Spartans clung to a 1-0 lead until freshman midfielder Celia de Pablo Esteban (Burgos, Spain) pulled the Wildcats even less than 12 minutes into the second half. She took a feed from classmate Kayla Goeddertz (Rochester, N.Y.) near the top of the box and scored her second goal of the season.

The teams traded scoring opportunities throughout the remainder of regulation time with four shot attempts apiece. Three of Daemen's opportunities came off the foot of de Pablo Esteban. All four of STAC's shots made their way on frame, but freshman goalkeeper Katelin White (Lewiston, N.Y.), the reigning ECC Defensive Player of the Week, turned away all four on her way to nine total saves in the contest.

Daemen generated an opportunity early in the overtime period when Goeddertz sent a long shot towards the goal, but STAC net-minder Courtney Dumain (Monroe, N.Y.) was there. The Spartans countered and Colotti got her head to a crossing feed, but again White stood tall for the Wildcats.

Phillips entered the game at the 96:59 mark. Moments later, she made a run up the left side and got behind the STAC defense while receiving a long pass from fellow freshman Aryana Dreyer (Orchard Park, N.Y.). Dumain turned away Phillips' initial shot attempt as she came out to challenge, but that left her out of position. Phillips got to the ball first and looped a shot over Dumain's head and across the goal line, sending her and her teammates into a frenzied celebration.

"We were much more composed in the second half, and I thought we got back to playing the Daemen way," said ninth-year head coach Dan Dolan, now just one win shy of 75 for his career. "We had a nice build up of possession leading up to Celia's tying goal. We've gone to overtime a few times now so we're getting used to battling in these tight games."

"On the winning play, Aryana laid a great ball up to Phillips as she was making her run, and she stayed with the play the entire time," the coach continued. "She didn't give up and was rewarded with the second effort. It was a little ugly for my liking as a whole, but we grinded it out and it's great to be 1-0 in the league."

STAC held a 15-13 edge in total shot attempts. Both teams were efficient in their attempts, placing 10 shots apiece on frame. Dumain made eight saves in defeat for the Spartans. White kept her unblemished record intact, moving to 3-0-1 between the pipes this season.

Daemen is back in action Tuesday, Sept. 19 with a non-league clash at Clarion University out of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
