For Communications Women's Soccer Continues Dramatic Winning Ways CLARION, Pa. - Sophomore forward Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y.) scored on a header in double overtime as the Daemen College women's soccer team continued its recent string of dramatic victories with a 1-0 defeat of host Clarion University in non-conference action this afternoon at Memorial Stadium. After 103 scoreless minutes, Boyar broke through, scoring her team-leading fourth goal of the season off a perfect crossing feed from senior forward Alex Juliano (Hamburg, N.Y.). The Wildcats took advantage of a quick re-start following a Clarion foul, and Juliano found herself alone up the left sideline. She drilled her pass which carried over the head of Clarion net-minder Krista Mosi as she came off the goal line to high-point the ball. Boyar made a great adjustment to the in-flight path of the ball and headed it to the back of an empty net, sending the Wildcats into what's become an all-too-common frenzied celebration. The Wildcats, now 4-1-1 on the season, have won four-straight contests, the team's most consecutive victories since a seven-game streak that encompassed the final five games of the 2012 season and the first two of 2013. Three of the recent victories have come in extra sessions. Freshman forward Kaylyn Phillips (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) netted the "golden goal" in the Wildcats' 2-1 overtime win this past Saturday in their East Coast Conference opener vs. St. Thomas Aquinas College. Boyar had previously scored on a penalty kick to deliver a 2-1 overtime defeat of Lake Erie College  on Sept. 8. She becomes the first Daemen player with two overtime game-winners in the same season since Samantha Engel in 2011. "We played our best soccer of the year in the first half," said head coach Dan Dolan who picked up his 75th career victory today. "In the second, the sun and temperature really got to us but it was great to see us play strong defensively and persevere again in overtime." Clarion, an affiliate of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, fell to 3-4-1 overall this season. The Golden Eagles had entered today's game as winners in two of their last three, and having already eclipsed their win total from all of 2016 when they went 2-14-2. Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Flores (West Seattle, Wash.) made the first start of her career between the pipes today for Daemen. She turned away six Clarion shot attempts to record the shutout - Daemen's second clean sheet of the season. Juniors Monique Green (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Alex Valenti (Clarence, N.Y.), and freshmen Kayla Goeddertz (Rochester, N.Y.) and Sam D'Agostino (Mississauga, Ont.) played strong defensively in front of the Wildcats' greenhorn net-minder. Mosi made four saves in a losing effor for the Golden Eagles who held a 17-9 advantage in total shot attempts, but just a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Daemen returns home to face nationally-ranked Long Island University Post in an East Coast Conference contest this Saturday, Sept. 23 at Karrer Field. The Pioneers will enter the contest ranked 12th in the country. First kick is set for 11 a.m. GAME NOTES: Daemen is now 3-0-1 in overtime games this season, and 5-0-2 over their last seven dating back to the 2015 season...Daemen's last overtime loss came on Oct. 2, 2015 (2-1 at Roberts Wesleyan)...with four goals and nine points this season, Boyar now ranks third among the ECC leaders in both categories...she also ranks tied for second in total shot attempts (27)...Daemen has allowed only four goals this season, tied for the second fewest among ECC teams...as a team, Daemen ranks third in the league in goals-against average (0.77)...Juliano registered her first assist since Sept. 18, 2016 in a 3-1 home victory over St. Thomas Aquinas...Dolan, now in his ninth season at the helm, holds a career record of 75-72-7 and is the program's all-time leader in wins.Print Friendly Version
