For Communications Wildcats Nipped By Greyhounds WORCESTER, Mass. - The Daemen College men's soccer team had its first multi-goal game since the middle of last season, but it wasn't enough as host Assumption College escaped with a 3-2 win over the Wildcats today in non-conference action at the Multi-Sport Stadium. The loss was Daemen's second in the last three days against a Northeast-10 Conference affiliate as coach Bobby McColl's young team drops to 0-2 on the season. The Wildcats, whose roster features 24 newcomers (22 freshmen), started 10 freshmen today. Assumption, which made its first NE-10 Conference Tournament berth since 2009 last season, survived an early one-goal deficit and pulled out the win in their 2017 opener. The Wildcats got off to a fast start today, which was pleasing to McColl coming off the team's 3-1 loss to Le Moyne College in which they surrendered three goals in the opening 13 minutes of the contest. Today is was Daemen that struck first as freshman Samuel Lockman (Tuleaa, Sweden) squeaked a low shot underneath the sprawling Assumption goalkeeper Brian Murray (Camas, Wash.) and inside the far right post less than five minutes into the contest. The Lockman tally gave Daemen its first 1-0 lead since Oct. 11 of last year against University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, which was also the last time the Wildcats produced at least two goals (3-2 overtime loss). Freshman midfielder Anthony Cupello (Rochester, N.Y.) picked up an assist on the play as he found Lockman streaking up the left wing. Sophomore forward Simon Trcka (Prague, Czech Republic), a second-team All-NE-10 pick last season, evened things up for the hosts with the team's first goal of the season, an unassisted marker at the 22:42 mark. The game would remain knotted at 1-1 for more than 50 minutes before AC's Jason Lages (Edgartown, Mass.), also a second-team All-NE-10 performer in 2016, put the Greyhounds on top with another unassisted tally at the 74:03 mark. Lages then assisted on a header goal by sophomore midfielder Andres Amador (Bogota, Colombia) at the 87:22 mark which all but put the game out of reach. Daemen did respond to make things interesting as freshman defender Brage Wiik (Tromsoe, Norway) notched the first goal of his career with exactly one minute remaining off a feed from classmate and countryman Kristian Aadnoy (Gjerdrum, Norway). But, the Greyhounds established possession thwarting any thought of a game-tying effort by the Wildcats. Graduate student Ross Stewart (Bangor, Northern Ireland), a defender, made an incredible team save in the waning moments to keep the score where it was. "I thought we started the game well, which was pleasing after our last game," said McColl afterwards. "We were on top for large spells of the game but we need to be more ruthless where it hurts. We had opportunities to extend our lead and all three goals that we conceded were avoidable. We'll learn and we'll get better. I certainly can't fault the effort of our guys." Assumption held a 21-16 advantage in total shot attempts, placing 12 on frame compared to Daemen's seven. Daemen generated nine corner kick opportunities in the game, including seven in the second half, while Assumption had five. Murray made five saves to pick up the win between the pipes for AC. Freshman net-minder Jarrett Lecceadone (Randolph, N.Y.) went the distance for Daemen, and made a career-best eight saves. Daemen closes its two-game trip to Massachusetts Monday by facing Stonehill College, its third NE-10 opponent of the season. Look for a full game preview at daemenwildcats.com on Sunday, Sept. 3.
