For Communications Men's Soccer Falls To #8 LIU Post AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College was held off the scoreboard for the first time this season, falling 3-0 to nationally-ranked Long Island University Post in East Coast Conference men's soccer action on a sultry September afternoon at Karrer Field. The Pioneers, unanimous picks to win their third consecutive ECC title this season, entered the contest ranked eighth in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II poll. The visitors got a pair of goals by junior midfielder Charlie Ledula (London, England), the reigning ECC Offensive Player of the Year, to help them improve to 5-0-1 on the season (1-0 in league play), while extending their regular-season ECC unbeaten streak to 10 games (9-0-1 dating back to last season). Daemen's record fell to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in ECC play. The Wildcats entered the contest as the third-highest scoring team in the ECC this season with 15 total goals through their first seven games. It was Daemen's first time being shutout since a 1-0 loss to the University of Bridgeport in the team's 2016 season finale. Ledula put the Pioneers on the board early, scoring his third goal of the season at the 2:13 mark. A long throw-in by Kevin Lamm (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) caromed away from a Daemen defender, landing near Ledula who was unmarked in the middle of the box. Ledula finished the play with a hard shot that Daemen goalkeeper Mike D'Amato (Orchard Park, N.Y.) had little chance of stopping. Daemen generated a couple of scoring opportunities in their attempt to knot the score before halftime. A strike from freshman forward Finn Krueger (Neuried, Germany) was turned aside by LIU Post net-minder Oliver Hessner Hansen (Vaerloese, Denmark) in the 24th minute. Moments later, Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin (Fjaras, Sweden) sent a free kick into the box where his countryman Victor Lanje (Helsingborg, Sweden) got a head to it, but it sailed just wide. Ledula made it a two-goal lead just over seven minutes into the second half as he finished off a crossing feed from senior midfielder Harry Pearse (London, England). It was Ledula's fourth goal of the season, giving him a multi-goal game for the first time since scoring twice in the ECC Tournament semifinals against St. Thomas Aquinas College last season. Daemen again battled their way back to the attacking third. Freshman forward Samuel Lockman (Luleaa, Sweden) got his head to another of Ringdahl Bohlin's bending free kicks, but like Lanje's, it went wide. Lockman added two more shot attempts in the half, one sailing wide and another was saved by Hessner Hansen. LIU Post added an insurance tally in the 84th minute as Martin Lozano (Beunos Aires, Argentina) intercepted a Daemen clearing attempt, carried the ball to open space and buried a high shot inside the upper right corner of the goal. Hessner Hansen made three saves to pick up his second shutout of the season for the highly-touted Pioneers. Despite taking the loss, D'Amato was impressive between the pipes for Daemen. After seeing his first action of the season and keeping a high-powered Gannon University team off the scoreboard in the second half this past Tuesday (Sept. 19), D'Amato got the start today and went the distance, making four saves. The Pioneers held a 16-12 edge in total shot attempts, and a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. Daemen returns to non-conference action Monday, Sept. 25 with a road contest at Shepherd University.  Print Friendly Version
