Men's Soccer Blanks Shepherd In Return To Win Column

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - A 15-minute span of the first half that featured goals from four different players paved the way for the Daemen College men's soccer team to pick up a 4-0 victory over Shepherd University in non-conference action today at the SU Soccer Complex.

The win snapped a four-game slide for Daemen as the Wildcats improved to 3-6 on the season, surpassing their win total from each of the last two seasons with still half of the schedule (nine games) remaining to be played this year. The offensive output today matched the Wildcats' highest scoring game of the season (last done in a 5-4 loss to Bloomsburg University on Sept. 10), and it gives the team 19 goals this season, surpassing their total from all of last season (17).

Shepherd, an affiliate of the Mountain East Conference, suffered its seventh consecutive defeat, falling to 0-7-1 this season. The Rams are mired in a 20-game winless drought (0-19-1), and are just 1-23-1 since the start of the 2016 season.

Freshman midfielder Anthony Cupello (Rochester, N.Y.), who hit the crossbar with a shot in the opening five minutes of the contest, got the Wildcats on the board at the 21:17 mark, finishing off a feed from classmate Kristian Aadnoy (Gjerdrum, Norway) for his first career goal.

Just over five minutes later, it was Aadnoy's turn as he scored off a feed from fellow freshman Noah Keem (Amherst, N.Y.) at the 26:33 mark, giving Daemen a two-goal advantage. It was Aadnoy's team-leading fifth goal of the season and it snapped a three-game goal-less drought for the Daemen freshman.

Less than two minutes later, Daemen was awarded a penalty kick which freshman Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin (Fjaras, Sweden) cashed in at the 28:12 mark for his second marker of the season.

Keem got in on the action at the 34:04 mark, scoring his first career goal off a feed from classmate Craig Buchanan (Glasgow, Scotland).

The first half ended with Daemen's four goals coming on eight total shot attempts, six of which made their way on frame. That's all the offense that the Wildcats would need. Shepherd managed 11 total shots in the game (compared to 14 for Daemen), four of which went on goal, but all were turned aside by freshman goalkeeper Mike D'Amato (Orchard Park, N.Y.). D'Amato has now seen action in three-straight games, and was awarded his second-straight start today. He went the distance and recorded Daemen's first shutout since Sept. 11, 2016 (1-0 vs. D'Youville College).

"It was good to get back to winning ways after a few tough losses," said second-year head coach Bobby McColl. "The guys played excellent in the first half, and overall it was a very professional performance. We managed the game well and it was good to stop them [Shepherd] from scoring. I was also very happy to see Anthony and Noah get their first goals as college players."

Daemen returns to East Coast Conference play Saturday, Sept. 30 with a road tilt against a N.Y. Institute of Technology team that was picked second in the league's preseason poll.

GAME NOTES: Freshmen contributors continue to be a storyline for Daemen this season...after scoring all four goals today, freshmen have accounted for 17 of the team's 19 goals this season...that's more goals by Daemen's freshmen alone than seven ECC teams so far this season...overall, Daemen ranks third in the league in total goals and fourth in goals per game (2.11)...Daemen now has two four-goal games in the same season since have three in 2011...With five goals and 12 points this season, Aadnoy is presently tied for thing among the ECC leaders in both categories...Both of Ringdahl Bohlin's goals this season have come on penalty kicks, and he's a perfect two-for-two in those situations...today's tally was his first since the 2017 season opener, a 3-1 loss to Le Moyne on Aug. 31...Daemen started 10 freshmen today, marking the third time this season they've done so...McColl has started at least nine freshmen in all nine games this season.
