Custodi Finishes First At Deer Creek Fall Challenge

MT. STERLING, Ohio - Redshirt freshman triathlete Amber Custodi (Ransomville, N.Y.) of the Daemen College women's triathlon team was the top finishing female at the Deer Creek Fall Challenge, a sprint-style triathlon held at Deer Creek State Park, just 20 miles southwest of Columbus. Today's race featured a 750-meter swim, a five-kilometer run and a 12.4-mile cycling portion.

Custodi posted an overall time of 1:14:18.52, putting her across the finish line some 45 seconds faster than the next closest female competitor (Krystle Cunningham - 1:15:04.68). The performance today is the latest accomplishment for Custodi who placed third at the Finger Lakes Triathlon two weeks ago. She's also already been an All-Region honoree based on her performance at Collegiate Triathlon Central Region Qualifier meet in early September.

Custodi was not the only Daemen triathlete to have success today. Veteran Jenifer Igoe (Oakfield, N.Y.) placed eighth among all female entrants, and first in the 20-24 age bracket. She posted a time of 1:24:14.89. Also, newcomer Carly Scott (Batavia, N.Y.) finished 32nd overall and third in the 20-24 age bracket with a time of 1:38:36.95.

Today's meet marked the end of the traditional fall season for coach Jon Metz's team. Custodi will compete one more time, at the Collegiate National Championship which is set for Sunday, Nov. 5 in Tempe, Ariz.

The sport of triathlon, which incorporates swimming, running and cycling, was termed an Emerging Sport For Women by the NCAA in January of 2014, establishing a 10-year window for the formation of 40 intercollegiate programs. The Daemen women's triathlon team, now in its third season of existence, is one of 15 NCAA programs in the country at present.
