AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's tennis team put together a solid effort this afternoon, but suffered a 5-4 loss to Walsh University in a non-conference match played at Ellicott Tennis Courts on the campus of the University at Buffalo.
Daemen dropped to 1-1 on the year, while the Cavaliers improved to 3-0. Walsh is a member of the NCAA Division II Great Midwest Athletic Conference.
All three doubles matches were highly competitive. Walsh took No. 1 doubles, as senior Vasily Vidmonov (Prague, Czech Republic) and graduate student Rodrigo Garcia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) downed Daemen's team of freshman Jose Williamson III (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) and senior Mark Veitengruber (Rockford, Mich. / Rockford), 8-5. Daemen answered with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles, as juniors David Gonzalez Villegas (Pereira, Colombia) and Ricardo Ruiz Martinez (Valencia, Spain) teamed up to defeat freshman Clemens Wagner (Deutsch Wagram, Austria) and senior Jonah Carter (Maumee, Ohio).
The Cavaliers took a 2-1 advantage into singles play after freshman Filipp Kulynuch (Kharkiv, Ukraine) and senior Tim Bruin (North Canton, Ohio) outlasted DC's tandem of rookie Pablo Martinez Hernandez (Huatulco, Mexico) and sophomore Fabian Wilde (Crimmitschau, Germany) at No. 3 doubles, 8-6.
Walsh held a 3-1 lead after Vidmanov defeated freshman Tim Georg (Aschaffenburg, Germany) at No. 1 singles by a score of 6-4, 6-2, but Daemen responded with wins at No. 2, No. 3 singles and No. 4 singles to take a 4-3 lead. Ruiz Martinez posted a 6-3, 7-5 win over Wagner at No. 2, Villegas was a 7-5, 6-2 winner over Garcia at No. 3 and Veitengruber dispatched Kulynych 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4.
Walsh tied the match at 4-4 after senior Heitor Adegas (Londrina, Brazil) defeated Wilde 7-6, 6-2 at No. 5, and the Cavaliers secured the win after freshman Guilherme Carneiro (Rio Verde, Brazil) defeated Martinez Hernandez 6-4, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
Daemen returns to action tomorrow (Oct. 1) when it hosts SUNY Oswego in a non-league match.
