Late Penalty Kicks Sink Wildcats At NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - Two penalty kicks awarded to N.Y. Institute of Technology in the final seven minutes of the second half turned a tie game into a 4-2 victory for the hosts over Daemen College in East Coast Conference women's soccer action today at a soggy President's Stadium.

After taking a 2-0 lead, Daemen surrendered back-to-back goals just over four minutes apart in the first half, knotting the score at 2-2. It remained that way until the 83:53 mark when freshman forward Casey Luongo (Center Moriches, N.Y.) scored on a penalty kick after generating a Daemen foul inside the box. A short time later, NYIT was granted another penalty kick opportunity after a yellow card was booked on Daemen goalkeeper Katelin White (Lewiston, N.Y.) in her attempt to thwart an NYIT breakaway. Senior midfielder Dina Simonian (Westbury, N.Y.) took the P.K. and scored for the Bears at the 88:27 mark to put the game out of reach; it was Simonian's third tally of the game.

NYIT, which was picked seventh in the ECC preseason poll (one spot above Daemen), evened its overall (4-4) and league (1-1) records with today's victory. After starting the season with three consecutive losses, the Bears have won four of their last five outings, outscoring their opponents 16-7 in that stretch.

Daemen dropped back to 5-3-1 overall and 1-2-0 in ECC play with the loss. The four goals conceded today are the most Daemen has allowed since a 7-3 loss to nationally-ranked University of Bridgeport in the penultimate game of the 2016 season. Daemen entered the game having allowed just nine goals in the team's first eight games, and ranked fourth in the league in goals-against average (1.06).

Freshman midfielder Celia de Pablo Esteban (Burgos, Spain) put Daemen on the board at the 8:03 mark with her fourth goal of the season. She took a feed from sophomore Lindsay Ciaramella (St. George, Ont.) near the top of the box and beat NYIT goalkeeper Jessie Sabal (Valley Stream, N.Y.) with a rocket of a shot that made its way just underneath the crossbar and inside the right post.

Later in the opening half, freshman midfielder Sam Hanes (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the year at the 28:46 mark to give Daemen a two-goal advantage. Daemen's de Pablo Esteban picked up an assist on the play as she slid a pass to Hanes who beat Sabal with a low shot that banged off the post and in.

But the lead wouldn't last as Simonian notched a pair of goals to equalize. At the 34:10 mark, she scored on a free kick from approximately 25 yards out as her shot hit the crossbar and deflected into the goal off White.  Shortly thereafter, at the 38:31 mark, Simonian struck again deflecting a crossing feed by senior defender Astasia Williams-Bertles (North Myrtle Beach, S.C.) into the net.

From there, the game remained tied for the next 45 minutes. Battling a driving rain storm, Daemen generated just one shot in that span as freshman defender Kayla Goeddertz (Rochester, N.Y.) hit the post with a shot attempt after a corner kick in the opening minute of the second half.

NYIT outshot Daemen 21-3 in the contest, placing eight total attempts on frame. The Bears also generated an 11-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.

White made four saves in a losing effort for the Wildcats. Her personal goalkeeping record stands at 3-2-1 this season.

Daemen returns to ECC action Wednesday, Oct. 4 when the Wildcats host longtime rival Roberts Wesleyan College to open a four-game homestand.
