Flores Named ECC Defensive Player of the Week By: By Jake Carlson, Athletics Communications Graduate Assistant Women's Soccer | 10/1/2018 6:00:00 PM AMHERST, N.Y. – Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Flores (Seattle, Wash.) of Daemen College has been named the East Coast Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for games played September 24-30. The official announcement was made via the league's weekly sport report which was released this afternoon from conference headquarters in West Babylon, N.Y. Flores totaled eight saves in the Wildcats' lone game last week, a 2-1 victory over New York Institute of Technology at Karrer Field on September 29. The win moved the Wildcats to 5-4 overall this season, and to 3-1 in ECC play which places them second in the league standings. The eight saves made by Flores are a season-high, just three shy of her career-high which she achieved last season. The superb goalkeeping effort came against a regionally-ranked NYIT team that came into the game averaging 2.38 goals per game, tops among all ECC teams this season. It marked the third game in Flores' career that she's made at least eight saves. She has also allowed one goal or fewer in five of the 12 games she's played in over the last two seasons. For the season, Flores has made five starts between the pipes, posting a 3-2 record. She leads the team with a 1.96 goals-against average and a .706 save percentage. The announcement today marked the third ECC weekly accolade of Flores' career. She previously earned ECC Rookie of the Week and ECC Defensive Player of the Week honors during the 2017 season. It's also the third ECC weekly award for the Wildcats this season; sophomore midfielder Celia de Pablo Esteban (Burgos, Spain) and junior forward Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y.) were each named ECC Offensive Player of the Week earlier in the season. Flores leads the Wildcats into a huge ECC matchup this Wednesday, October 3 against first-place and nationally-ranked Mercy College.
