Wildcats Fall To #11 Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - In a meeting between first and second place teams in the East Coast Conference standings, nationally-ranked Mercy College got a pair of second half goals from senior Haley Noble to knock off Daemen College 3-1 this afternoon at Mercy Field.

Daemen (5-5 overall, 3-2 ECC) saw its three-game ECC winning streak come to an end. The Wildcats came into the contest tied with Long Island University Post for second place in the conference standings

Mercy, which was deemed as the favorite to win the league this season after advancing to the national semifinals in 2017, stayed perfect in ECC play this season (4-0) while upping their overall record to 8-1. The Mavericks came into the game ranked No. 2 in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II East Region poll, and No. 11 in the national poll. Mercy has now won seven straight games overall, and six straight ECC contests dating back to last season.

The Mavericks got on the board first as senior midfielder Corrina Ferrante scored on a long shot to the upper right corner of the net at the 18:24 mark.

The upset-minded Wildcats came back to even things up just under four minutes into the second half. Sophomore midfielder Celia de Pablo Esteban (Burgos, Spain) sent a crossing feed into the box where it was headed to the back of the net by freshman midfielder Elise Williams (Clarence, N.Y.) at the 48:52 mark. It marked the first goal of Williams' collegiate career, and the assist was de Pablo Esteban's league-leading seventh of the season.

The score remained tied until Noble, a second team All-ECC selection last season, scored at the 66:07 mark. She took a through ball from Ferrante up the right side, and her hard shot from 10 yards out ricocheted off a Daemen defender and over the goal line.

Noble would strike again with her sixth goal of the season to provide the final margin, one-touching Jess Brandt's corner kick at the 87:00 minute mark to the back of the net.

Mercy held a 17-3 advantage in shot attempts today, including a 10-1 edge in shots on goal. The Wildcats dropped to 1-4 this season when being out-shot.

Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Flores (Seattle, Wash.), the reigning ECC Defensive Player of the Week, made her sixth start of the season for Daemen and finished with seven saves, one shy of her season-high. Her counterpart, Mercy's Melissa Torres, picked up the goalkeeping victory without recording a save.

The Wildcats, now in third place in the ECC standings, look to regroup and keep pace with the upper echelon of the league this Saturday, October 6 when they visit the No. 5 ranked team in the East Region, the University of Bridgeport.
